I'm considering buying an engine crane for work on my landy 200tdi. Is a 1 ton crane enough or should I go for a 2 ton one.

1 ton should be fine unless you plan on picking up the whole car lol. The engine will weigh around 200kgs tops, the gearbox and transfer maybe another 100kg. Even if you go worst case and say 500kg for the complete assembly you are well within its capability.

Of course if the 2 ton isnt much more than the 1ton it would be a no brainer not to have that extra factor of safety :)

Remember that at full reach the load capacity drops drastically so lifting a 200tdi + box out of a landy on less than perfectly smooth level ground is pushing it with a 1ton hoist

I would go for the 2 tonne, iv seen us use it to lift the rear of the car etc when working on the rear axle. It might cost more but I would say its worth it.

As been mentioned by the time you have the crane on full
reach to clear the front of the landy, you will need the extra
Stability of the larger crane.

ive got the 1 tonne and it has lifted 2.5 TD out of my defender and 3.5 V8out of my disco and a 3.5 v8 complete with gear box out of my van - zero issues

its just a clarke cfc100

common sense applies though - the 2tonne was more than double the price when i looked though at about 500 quid !

Top drive, when lifting the 2.5 TD out of the LANDY did you have to take the tyres down in order to lower the front.

I have the same CFC100 I've never had trouble with it yet and its earned its keep so far.

Our old one was more of a ridged frame with 3ton lift but it was a pain to store and not easy to move around like the new one is.

I took a 200tdi out of a Discovery with no issues. Also used it to pick up the full back end of my MR2 as it can lift it square from both towing eyes and generally get it alot higher than the jacks can.

I only really deal with RX8s and the engine on those only weighs about 150kg with ancillaries but I bought a 2ton crane to get the extra reach and stability. At full reach it will still lift 250kgs.

It seems the CFC 100 will do the job as has been mentioned in this thread. I'm on my way to machine mart as they are doing VAT free sale today. cant justify a 2 ton as it is nearly £500

aaronmorris, thats good bit of kit you got there but why did you need to lift it that high?

I'm planning on changing the axle and my trolley jack is crap and wont go high enough, So plan on lifting it with the crane instead, Was just making sure it would lift it ok before I do the job. I don't plan on having it that high when I do it, I just got carried away
