Which Disco and what too look for?

Hi, i have currently got a freelander, but i am looking to buy a Discovery.
It will be on a budget of approx 9 grand and as i live in Spain ( where 4x4s hold their value very well!) this is going to limit me to an earlier model probably a 300Tdi or an early TD5.
What i would like to know is what to look out for with problems etc and what sort of mileage to go for with regards to possible major problems.
Hope you can give a little bit of advice.

Oh an look out for Rust

presumably you're talkin about 9000 euros - bout £6200

don't know about prices over in spain but over here for £6200 you could get an early (99 to 2001) TD5 with about 80K to 100K on the clock, so if prices are higher over there you're prob better looking for a late Tdi. - over here £5
k to £6K would get you a late (R,S or T reg) top spec 300tdi.

TD5 has more modern styling & better interior BUT has more of the dreaded electronics to go wrong. Tdi is much easier to work on yourself.

ps watch out for the rust - I was amazed how much there was under my 2001 TD5.
