which cylinder head gasket?

Slow progress I'm afraid, mainly due to having lovely neighbours who stop and talk for ages!
I've put the old turbo and air manifold back on for now, filled it up with new oil and fitted the compression tester to via the heater plug hole to No1 cylinder.
Nothing in showing on the gauge.
This joint, below the nut, swivels and is quite loose. I can't see it being gas tight.

Is it supposed to be loose. Brand new tester! There was a little valve, like a tyre valve, in the end of the adaptor that screwed in to the glowplug hole. Couldn't see how gas could get passed this as there is nothing to press the pin in the middle of it. Took it out and tried again, still no reading on the compression tester.
Also, the No4 (nearest bulkhead if that's right) heater plug has burned away on the end. Can that happen  Does it mean serious damage to the cylinder
They are laid out, from the left 4, 3, 2, 1

Should I just resign myself to taking the head off?

I had a petrol tester like that, it was pretty cheap and that was the result I got, cheap and nasty.
Only thing left is the hose cut off, jubilee clip on it and used as an extension on a decent one.
Mine made it to about 50psi on all cylinders, anything above this and it leaked.

Yeah, it was cheap. Serves me right.

Also Al have you got some washers that will fit INSIDE the valve block ?? That way you MAY get it to seal !!:rolleyes:

Magicgrotto, the thread screws up into the valve block (white arrow) really tight, no bother.
I can't tighten the nut down towards the red arrow and so nipping the pipe up at the yellow arrow. The yellow arrow is where the air is getting out.
