We went over to Arromanches last year towing the caravan, but did a lot of green-lanes in France. I used IGN maps in Memory Map, made it easy (ish) to find lanes. When I asked most people just said all lanes are legal to drive!

I go down to Bulgaria each summer you can off road almost any where you like and beer will cost about 40 pence a pint in most bars it is an amazing country and the local people are very friendly if you are interested let me know

English 111 - I agree totally - I live in Bulgaria and have driven two land rovers over here. Fantastic country for off roading and verycheap / free for camping.

Also 3 hours across the border and you hit Istanbul - now that is a fantastic end point for an overland adventure and as far in Europe as you can go.

Let me know next time you make it over and we can meet up.

Its 2000 miles without detours - 36 hours driving (have done in less than 2 days in a 110 ex military with no power steering - now that was fun.

Depends what you want to see;

Mountains; Alps, French, Italian, Swiss, Austrian,
Dirt tracks throught he pyrenees, Andorra duty free
Lakes/forests; Germany, Belgium, Swiss, Italy, etc
Warmer coasts, S of France, Spain, portugal, Italy, Greece

All of these are in easyish reach.
Just find out what you want to see; then plan, plan, prepare and have fun and yes to testing the equipment and yourself, not everyones cup of tea, driving for days, camping. And I agree, did one trip which i paid a company for (landyrally) great fun, but, have been several times since, sometimes solo, love it.

And Europe, is so much easier to get around than here.
