..other starter motor bolt? (td4 auto 2001)

Trying to get the start of this stupid german engine.

Have the cables disconnected and the front bolt out. Found a bolt on top of the gearbox, as per other freds. (see photo 1)

Removed the bolt, it does not look like the starter motor bolt. So what is it? (photo 2 show about where it came from)

Where is the other sodding starter motor bolt?

:mad2:

infront of the one that I got out is a hole almost big enough to get my finger (lift eye of some kind?) Can't see nothing for all the pipes and things...

Is it further forward than that?

Is that a gearbox to engine mount bolt? Or have a screwed something else?

yeah I did, That's how I thought I'd figured out how to get the starter of in the first place!

Ok, if you think you have got the back bolt out then have you given the starter a tap as they can be tight in the housing. there are only the two bolts the long one that has the earth strap on, and the back one that bolts into the starter. The bolts are aprox 180 deg opposite each other

I got the front one out, thought I had the back one, but its not as long as the one on the thread (see photo above). hopefully that nothing more than a gearbox to engine bolt, and will just go back in and not cause any further issue.

front where that bold was, I can feel a round hole, like a lifting ring or something like that, its about the diameter of a finger.

I cannot see anything else as its all underneath all the pipe work, etc that is draped over the top of the gear box. I cannot feel an other bolt head.

So using the lifting ring as a reference, should the bolt head be further towards the radiator? on the same flange or further to the nearside?

Also, I found a stray bold on top of the gearbox......god know where that's from! Ain't garages great!! Looks like someone has bend the ring on the earth lead 90 degrees to make it fit, the rubber boot in on the wrong side of the cable! (the other cable looks like it came out of the factory with a 90 deg bends in it)

Ok, standing in front looking at the engine, if you put your right hand on the bolt hole that you have removed, lift your hand up going clockwise around the bell housing, when you get to about 180 deg you will find a bolt head 13mm, it unscrews towards the nearside wing as the thread is in the starter, its a clearance hole in the bell housing. Once you find it you will kick your self,

Finally found it. Right next to the lifting ring thing and almost exactly under it.

What a pain in the ass! especially in the dark and rain!!! :p

Once the motor was loose, it was a pain to get of the engine due to limited space to put it through.

New plunger and contacts are now fitted inside the solenoid as well, that was easy!!!

So now that's out, I have to find the crank sensor an swap that in the morning, and have it all back together and running to go to work at 2pm.....

All done.

Starter sorted, been started about 6 time and worked everytime. £10 solenoid kit off ebay.

Crank Sensor changed, now revs above 3000 and no juddering going up hills :)

Happy Days!!! :D

I was to late to answer sorry but glad you got it I could not remember the lifting ring:scratching_chin:

I assume that is what it is, just above starter bolt and next to gearbox bolt.

Thanks everyone for you help and advice, and reading my frustrated rants!
