Hi
Am a newbie on here, hoping someone can give me sum pointers with a P38 i've just bought for the missus.
Its a 1996 4.6HSE on LPG. Lovely car, sat on Overfinch 22" alloys. Drives spot on until you hit 45mph, then it starts to shake the steering wheel. Doesnt matter whether your accelerating or decelerating, but doesnt do it every time, maybe 7 out of 10 times regardless of road surface. Have checked tyre pressures, steering box slack, cant see any play in track rod ends. Am a bit baffled with it. Hope i've posted this in the right place, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hope you have thick skin!
check the wheels have spigot rings and fit tight to hub-aftermarket wheels without spigot rings cause all manor of issues similar to you describe.

Spigot rings ? I take it these are between the hub and the inside of the wheel. It hasnt got any on if thats so !!! At least i didnt see any when i took the wheels off to have them balanced yesterday

in which case it would be wise to check to see if the wheel is sloppy on centres and requires spigot rings.

Tyre choice and bushes also play a part, but steering damper common too.

Are you complaining of a wheel balance type issue only or a steering stability issue.

steering instability is often a faulty steering damper

Dont think its a wheel balance issue, as i had them balanced. It just seems to shake the whole car, it is worse when slowing down, scared the pants of the wife !! Does it even when on a smooth road (which is a rare find lately ). Will pull the wheels off and check. I've had Disco's in the past (with standard wheels on ) but never come across this issue before.

If you have 22" alloys on, with No Spiggots fitted it is most likely this as the cause, I had the same issue when I first had my car with 19", although I did have the spiggots on they were not pushed all the way to the back of the hub (agianst the disc) and the wheel was sitting down behind it,so may as well not have been there in the first place......soon as I pushed them on properly, shaking went away......

As per other posts, there are many other issues that can cause these symptoms, but this is an easy and very cheap fix......
