P38A Wheel nuts for steel rims

Can anyone recommend some suitable wheelnuts to fit a p38 when using steel rims?

When I bought the rims they did come with some wheelnuts (19mm socket I think!). But there must have been slightly the wrong size/pitch. As they didn't thread onto the studs very well at all. Needed an impact gun and it would strip the thread out of the nut.

So I bought some claimed OEM style wheelnuts. These fit much better, but they have gone rusty and horrid looking (seller was ****ing useless too).

So I'm looking for suggestions on something that will fit, be suitable for steel rims and not rust! Thanks.

If you need an impact gun then maybe the wrong thread? You need to be able to put a spare on when you get a flat.

Never tried to put steel wheels on though

You can't use nuts for steel wheels on alloys, but can you the other way around? I don't know, someone else might
Thinking about it, if your alloy gets a flat and you put a spacesaver wheel on, that's steel and you use the nuts you just took off

Hadn't noticed that, doesn't look like it's fully on the hub either

Looks like the wrong wheel, the centre hole is too large to locate properly on the stub.
I think you can use the standard alloy wheel nuts as they have a conical end and some cars came with a steel spare rather than an alloy.

+1^^ the alloy wheels are spigot mounted,the spigot taking the weight,the nuts only hold it against the hub.

I think some of the disco 2 wheelnuts came as 19mm or possibly 24mm rather than 27mm. Might do the trick?

The studs are fine, it is also an aftermarket rim.....

If the wheel wasn't on the hub you'd know by driving 20 feet. The rim is mounted fine.

How is it the wrong wheel?

Steel wheels are not hubcentric, they are nut centric. Same as on other Land Rovers, which is why you need to use different wheel nuts for steel rims. The locate the wheel and hold it on. While the alloy wheels are located on the hub (hubcentric) and the wheelnuts do nothing but hold the wheel on.

Disco 2 uses the same hub and nuts as a p38.

I know it's a personal thing but I think steel wheels look odd on a 38.

Have the nuts not been done up fully for the purposes of the photo? Always thought the stud should use the nut fully

Nuts are done up. The nut is quite long. If the nuts had a captive end on. You’d use exactly the same amount of thread on the stud. You just wouldn’t be able to see it.

bit of a blurred pic from Google. But here is a factory Disco 2 steel rim on a Disco 2. Using the same factory wheel nuts. You can clearly see the thread is inset the same as how they are mounted on mine. This is how Land Rover would have supplied and fitted these rims.

It is a personal thing yes.

Some alloys are ok. Mine was factory fitted with 18’s though. Which was a bit more limiting finding a decent off road tyre. So I wanted 16” and a slightly different offset as even the factory wheels rubbed under full flex.

Alloys as a rule are more money to buy and less robust off road.

I also happen to like how my p38 looks.

Can you not get some plastic covers to go over them?

Have them on our fender but they are bigger than 19mm.

The steel OEM spare on mine is certainly hub centric as you put it. It's a tight fit over the stub.

No, I had some with smaller nuts, not the standard 27mm ones. You could have had them but a bloke saw they had snow tyres on and wanted them so I sold them to him.
