Ok, I would like some advice please. My 110 started to devolop what I can only describe as light steering. You can only notice it on duel carrageways. Going in a straight line and when it feels like it, the steering becomes light, moves slightly to the left, flat spot, enough to notice and its a scary moment when it happens. The steering when it doesn't do it is very responsive too. It had a full service yesterday and the mechanic told me that there was nothing wrong that he could see. This garage work on a lot of Defenders and have a good reputation. Two rear shock absorbers were also changed on the rear. The steering problem was already there before the service. All tyres are new. I took it today to get the tracking done. Another company with a great reputation. I explained my problem, the chap stated that the tracking, even if it was a little out would not be the cause of my symtoms. So its re-booked on Monday with the tyre tracking garage for them to test drive it and try and hopefully find the problem. Its very unpredictable to drive at the moment and dangerous.

I'm stumped to think what it could be?? Any ideas?

Thank you.

When you say the steering is very responsive, [ Light, so light you can turn the wheel with one finger ] is this in normal driving and even standing still ?
If so then there is a valve failure in the steering box.

I'd say the steering slightly moves in my grip to the left.

So did you get the tracking done?
Are they going to jack it up and look for soggy bushes?

No the tracking didn't get done as of yet. Not sure what they will be doing. I'll be drooping it off on Monday morning. I'm pretty sure the mechanic would of seen the bushes as he found the rear lower shock absorber bush had split.

Cheers

The lightness only occurs when im driving. When static the steering is ok.

That is ok then, just it happened to mine, at standstill you could turn the wheel with one finger.Bit touchy on the road.

No mine isn't that light. Its noticeable on motorways. The steering wheel notches to the left and it keeps going straight, but I correct it instantly. Steering is vague, scary!
Hopefully Monday they will find the problem.

Two causes of notchy steering worth a check
Track rod bent a bit and catching in the guide under the diff.
Small UJ's on steering colume are seizing.
