Ive just worked out my mpg from my first tank and it's 34mpg. In a td4 2004. With no mods under the bonnet
I'm am impressed! I do alot of start stop in my work and a good amount of traffic crawling getting there.
But now you can all shoot me down in flames and tell me how good yours is and what you have.

I'm currently running without propshaft until I get a new VCU. I'm also running 205/80/16 Kumho KL78 AT- new all round at 30psi. Engine freshly serviced and a CAT bypass pipe. I drive mainly country roads at 60-65 with motorway at same and bit round town. I mainly drive with a very light foot but still don't hang around.

I calculated my mpg by brim to brim and my speedo/odometer is spot on according to the GPS.

I get 42mpg out of my L series.

I think a well maintained vehicle set up right with good economical driving will help the most.

40ish with our 2001 td4 on a good run less on short runs. On the other hand once had average of 9 over a full tank on my v8 110, heavy foot was a new toy then. Can get it up over 20 with lightish foot on long run average is 15-17.

Was checking regularly - about 34/5 ish then winter came and not quite sure what it has gone down to. Mainly short journeys to and from work and stuff. 2001 TD4 manual.

Just retested mine TD4 Xreg .... new VCU, EGR mod, fully services now getting
39mpg mixed on a run I'm expecting over 40........I am fairly light fotted.
When i got car I got 30mpg ...... new airfilter and VCU made huge difference.

just to update from my earlier post where i was only getting 21mpg....having fitted the egr bypass (well blanked the vac hose and cleaned up the original egr) and cleaned out the inlet manifold my last two tanks have returned 27mpg!!!! If you bear in mind that this is an auto and 99% of my running is local short trips I'm pretty pleased with it considering the handbook states 25mpg urban cycle! Got a synergy to fit now though so back to 20mpg again i guess LOL

Getting about 35/36 out of my Defender 200 TDI. Just driving here and there I thought it was pretty good, no mods just regularly serviced (not light footed either)

I'm considering a new VCU, where did you get yours? Any recommendations?

Hi Sasha, my wife has a Freelander TD4 ES Automatic, which I love driving when I get a chance. I have checked its fuel economy many times because it is also a good way to keep tabs on a car's health. The fuel tank is filled up to the top and the trip meter is reset to zero, when the car needs its next fill-up the amount of fuel needed to fill-up the tank to the top is recorded and the trip meter's mileage recorded, so a very precise calculation of miles per gallon can be made. Our Freelander returns 42 mpg. Most journeys are on country lanes with no traffic (we live in West Cork in Ireland) and most journeys are not start/stop and average 15 miles when my wife drives to work, or 40 miles when I drive to Cork city. So your mileage is low but for the reasons of stop/start and traffic, or you're fond of exceleration (?), or something is not quite right but not very wrong either, or we have an extremely good TD4?

Hi Skynet got vcu from Freelanderspares.co.uk ..... a recon unit. Excelent service, unit made a huge difference and improved mpg by around 3mpg. Car was really binding hard before (110k) ...on turns......now it feels great...you can just sense a fractional amount of resistance on a sharp turn. I have just changed from winter noblies to Hankook DynaPro ATM's I'm hoping this will further help mpg. Hope this helps...
