I'm just getting some information up and on the web about the longevity of landrovers. I know with decent oil changes and a laissez-faire maintenance program they last a long time, but how long?

150,000 miles ok cool.
200,000 miles doable?
300,000 miles the limit?
And beyond???!

Mine is at about 70,000 miles so far and no problems, but there's a lot of grizzled and old beasts still cutting it with the young guns too....
No book or online magazine can give us the real deal on this. It can only come from actual flesh and blood landrover owners who ride the things for real.
Hence this thread.

It doesn't matter what landrover you own but I feel that the real daddies of longevity will be the Series and Defenders! :D But we shall see...

Can't remember exactly, but my '95 Disco 300TDi is on about 238,000 - I think - and going strong.

I've recently done 3 trips from Dorset up to Aberdeen (550 miles each way) with no problems what-so-ever. And take it out laning every no and again.
 
Thing is if your landy has done 300,000mies how much of it is actually part of the original vehicle. Speshully bearing in mind the habit folks have of swapping and changing bits about. Rmember that ridiculous article in lro about the defender that was claimed to have done 'alf a million miles? Turned out it was a proper ringer and made the magazine look even bigger plonkers than usual.
 
So far (not all done by me, and I'm sure a lot more than this has been done...)

Bottom end rebuild
Two head gaskets
New water pump
Recored rad
New clutch
Inner wings and chassis patched up (more plate than original)
 
Well mine current trusty disco has only a mear 125,000 on the clock but the one b 4 that was still been run in at a tad over 280,000 miles can't really comment on what was origanal cos I did change the gear box and 2 diff's on that in the 3 years we had her b 4 she got shunted down a motorway but far as I know was still original 300tdi engine.

but just for the hell of it my work motor that I drive every working day has just recently gone past the 2 million Km's mark i.e. 2nd time round clock but then again that would be cheating as its a daf 6x2 44tonnes tractor unit thats now at the grand old age of 7 years and 4 months tee hee
 
They reckon TDI's should be good for 500,000miles before the block needs worked on, and a full rebuild - so say you did some pistons and rings and new bearings before then. I reckon with a half million overhaul you could do a million with good servicing! Lot's of things will need done along the way but I reckon it's possible.

A lot of older American vehicles are up near a million, light trucks and utility vehicles and things, OK they smoke and rattle a bit, but with some work they would probably be good for the same again, the key is oil; which Americans change stupidly frequently, like 3000miles but perhaps it pays off. Now a days it is a joke with modern cars that won't even hold together long enough for the engine to get to these milages, they think 5000miles is a long service interval!

When I were a kid I was dragged off to some castle or something and there we saw this axe. The original axe used by King someone in the crusades or summat like that. "Original", stated the sign, but also pointed out the three new handles and two new heads.......

a farmer i spoke to the other day has a td5 90 (03 plate) its had regular 3 / 4 k services and its done 220k without skipping a beat (and he is not the sort to treat it kindly either)

my 300tdi auto is still a baby then 179000 on the clock plenty of electrical problems but thankfully nothing mechanical YET:eek:
