Evening all! As a newbie to Landys, when did the 90 become the defender and was there many differences? Curiosity you see;) Mine is an '84 softtop.

Yours is a 90 and an early one at that.

110 came out in 1983, 90 in 1984. Both renamed to Defender in 1990 after they released the Disco in 1989.

Any use ter you?

Cheers Adz;) question was of interest factor only! Nice to know what yer talkin about and not sound like a dick calling it a defender when its not:D

They are pretty much the same - most parts fit both. Mine is an 84 also, there are some differences though,

i.e. up to 1986 has lift up door handles and therefore different doorcards etc
the REALLY early 110s, like 1983's, has slidy door windows and other things, it was only when the 90 was released that they made them both windy up.

The defender badge was mainly done as advertising, 'cos they had just sold lots to the military.

Yours will also have things like external bonnet release, i think slightly different switches in some locations, etc, also it will have different wiring (slightly) to a late 86 onwards one, that kinda not very important difference.

Welcome to Landy ownership and the LoonyZone! Both will give you lots of fun, don't be afraid to ask stuff either! Taking the ****, however, is mandatory. :)

As already said, they became Defenders about 1990, specifically when the Tdi engine was fitted. It involved major changes, the interior light came on automatically when you opened the door.
However Land Rover then applied the name retrospectively to all Nineties and OneTens, for example the parts book is titled Defender even when it covers far earlier vehicles.
As regards the changes, there were just as significant changes both before and after the name change, so identifying the vehicle by year/vin no is far more important that the name. Bear in mind many Defenders have been modified, so don't be surprised if the "correct" bits are don't fit!
