whats the differance between desiel oil and petrol oil?

A buddie of mine has given me 20 lts of Shell 15/40 oil.
it is not marked desiel..
is it there a definate differance between oil label sutiable for desiels and petrol oils?
grateful for anyones advice or knowledge

fookin hell, i had ta read this a dozen times before i realised a BUDDIE not a BUDGIE gave u this oil!!
