Could be a sticky inlet / exhaust valve, tight tappet ?Got a chuffing noise, sounds like the manifold gasket maybe head gasket but wanted to see if anything else could be an issue. It stops when lead to plug 4 is removed
Ive checked the tappets all fineCould be a sticky inlet / exhaust valve, tight tappet ?

err thats a good point - the air pressure in the cylinder would still be pushing air outIs plug 4 tight?
If the gasket has gone unsure why it does not make a noise without combustion.
Any talc on the gasket might might help if it blows a gas
Extra pressure from combustion on a failing gasketIf the gasket has gone unsure why it does not make a noise without combustion.
plugs in tight, looks like ive got a few evenings of spannering to doIf it's not the plug then i would bet the HG
I had a hg leak direct to the outside.. started off as a chuff.. developed into a gunshotMy bet would be manifold gasket. HG would probably leak to cooling first. You could try feeling for gas blowing around CYl 4, if there is space to see!
Oil looks fine and no bubbles in rad so possible blow to edgeMy bet would be manifold gasket. HG would probably leak to cooling first. You could try feeling for gas blowing around CYl 4, if there is space to see!
So another contestant going with the head gasket200tdi head gasket likes to fail on the rear of number 4, apple don't fall far from the tree and all that!
You can feel it if you put your hand down the back of the cyl head.
No, i think hg.so the votes are in on the new Landy zone gameshow "Name that chuffing noise!"
@Hicap phill says its a head gasket
@kermit_rr says its the manifold gasket
@jimleshed also going with manifold gasket
@landowner thinks it could be a sticky valve or tight tappet
I'm going to start work on it tonight but but don't intend being in the garage all night so it may be a few days before we announce the winner.
Oops, so that's 3 head gaskets.1 manifold gasket, 1 sticky valve/tappets.No, i think hg.
