Got a chuffing noise, sounds like the manifold gasket maybe head gasket but wanted to see if anything else could be an issue. It stops when lead to plug 4 is removed

Could be a sticky inlet / exhaust valve, tight tappet ?

Is plug 4 tight?

If the gasket has gone unsure why it does not make a noise without combustion.

Any talc on the gasket might might help if it blows a gas

err thats a good point - the air pressure in the cylinder would still be pushing air out

think the process is going to be 1 remove manifold see if any obvious damage to gasket, new manifold gasket, if that doesnt do the trick then could it be the head gasket - or is it worth putting a new head gasket on anyway?

so the votes are in on the new Landy zone gameshow "Name that chuffing noise!"

@Hicap phill says its a head gasket
@kermit_rr says its the manifold gasket
@jimleshed also going with manifold gasket
@landowner thinks it could be a sticky valve or tight tappet

I'm going to start work on it tonight but but don't intend being in the garage all night so it may be a few days before we announce the winner.

200tdi head gasket likes to fail on the rear of number 4, apple don't fall far from the tree and all that!
You can feel it if you put your hand down the back of the cyl head.

No, i think hg. 👍

I go manifold... but get a piece of hose, put one end on your ear, and with the other end search around the edge of the HG and manifold...
