I've been looking to swap my disco for a defender lately. (Ideally a 110 SW). On the basis that I've tried two series 3s now and they offer the raw landy drivability, but really are a little too tractor-like for my daily use. I use military defenders in my line of work, and find them to be newer, and very slightly more refined than series' but are still the rugged, no-bull****, cousin of the rangie and disco.

The military landys certainly don't have power steering, but alot of the defenders I'm looking at (between 89 and 92), seem to have power steering.

It may sound weird, but I think I'd rather not have PAS, because you get more of a feel for the road without it, and driving is more enjoyable in my opinion. A defender after all is a defender, and I want one because my disco is too refined for me.

Am I crazy?

My 110 V8 had PAS from new in 86

If you really want one without PAS don't let it influence your buying decision, just take it off.

I am sure there is someone on here that has an ex sqaddie machine that would do you a swap for your PAS components.

When i got my 92 defender, the pas box was knackered, I spent a few months driving it before saving up the money to get a recon box. It made a huge difference. My landy is now a lot more manoeuvrable and my dad reckons more than his citroen C4. I felt to have less control without the pas because it was always having to put so much effort into turning large corners (obviously at low speed, but still).

Having driven both, I wouldn't go for no PAS if I had the choice, but that's just my point of view.
