What to do with a 90?

Hi all,
I am a newbie to the forum. My uncle has a Defender 90 and I fell in love with it. I am looking on buying one, and building it to be an off-roader. I would like to know if there are any tips and things that I should do or look out for when doing this. Any details on the engines. Also I would like to see some pictures of what you have done with your 90's.

I hope to hear some info! :)
 
It's all ready an off roader, unless you're made of cash upgrade it as you go once you've found out what you need not what you think you need. Mines fairly standard looking and unlifted
 
Best engines are 200tdi, 300tdi and TD5. 200tdi being most basic of them and TD5 most modern / sophisticated.

Depends on how mechanically simple you want it to be.

Look at Defender buying guides that will explain everything to look out for. Good luck.

I was not too sure about its stock off roading capability, so thanks. I am looking at one with a 300TDI. I have driven one with that motor and I really like it. I plan to lift it, and do some modding to it.

I will look at the buyers guide for more info on the motors. I would like to see some pictures if possible.
 
200tdi axles are stronger, 300tdi engines are better but I find the 200tdi engine better on fuel and td5 ain't to good in water due to the electronics. Discovery axles with rear discs are better than drums as well due so mud getting in the drums causing them to not work!
Mod wise just 2 inch lift, 32 inch tyres, snorkel and may need spacers to clear the bigger wheels from the chassis. Also would advise a winch, mine didn't really get stuck but didn't want to get stuck on my own somewhere so I stuck a winch on.

Personally I wouldn't lift mine as it can ruin the on road capabilities and do you fit the winch on the front or rear?

Agree, and it is also limiting if you have to go under low branches and tight vegetation.

Tirfor winch in the back and a few tree straps, pull in any direction you need! ;)
 
This is mine...



I run 265/75/16 BFG mud terrains, standard height suspension, 24 spline axles to give me disk brakes and no spacers for alloys. I've been through mud that deep that the back step was 'ploughing' but as previously said it's just as much about technique as it is mods. But if your looking at a 300tdi it should be a pretty capable machine anyway
 
Here is mine on at with 265/75/16 on standard height but I am lucky to as I have a set of muds the same size to.

Branches don't stop you in a landy mate haha I use mine as a daily it's lifted 2inch, insa special track tyres, straight through exhaust and it's not a problem for me lol!!
