What to buy?!

There's a 2000 TD5 with 150k on it, on Autotrader at the moment for £5,800. There must be a catch surely?

have you thought about getting a commercial discovery instead of a 110?

You'll get a lot more vehicle for your money, not quite as big load space but equally capable off road, much more comfortable cab, more toys etc.

Sounds interesting. Ie from a dealer that specialises in commercial vehicles? Ex utility company or something?

not particularly from a dealer, private sales are generally cheaper. there's a few of them on ebay have a look. or you could always get a 3 door non commercial, whip out the back seats and black out the windows........job done. ;)

The other guys Paul are far better at spotting year/model discrepancies than I am.

Microcat does not cross reference a VIN number to that registration - that can mean something or nothing (microcat is that Land Rover parts database - if the plate was changed from when the Landy was first registered, microcat won't know)

At face value looks tidy, and others on autotrader around that price point - and being a private sale could well be slightly lower than the trade sellers.

Best advice is see who else comments, and if you're interested, go look with your wits about you.

If you pm me your email address, I'll send you a 9 page 'things to look out for' document - it duplicates much of the link I posted earlier, but does go into greater depth. File is too large to attach here

You said you wanted to learn about the mechanicals by buying a landy. The issue with a TD5 is that you cant really do much work on them as a novice, the engine that is. You would be better off with a TDI because they can be serviced by an idiot (like me).

I had the same budget as you earlier this year and ended up concluding that I wanted a 90, county spec, solid chassis and bulkhead and a tidy looking TDI. It took some hunting and I saw some real rubbish but ended up with a landy that I am really happy with.
