What engine combination are you thinking? IMO...
All will take getting used to, especially from normal cars...
2.25d slow, slower on hills, but tbh mine does 45-55mph on the motorway, and I feel that's a 'comfortable speed' (I.e not deafened) also I get 20 mpg about town, 33 ish mpg on motorway
2.25petrol faster and more powerful than the diesel, I would say less reliable, particulary if mostly offroad use however with more power I think normal roads are more bareable but I think mpg is less than 20 wherever you go (never owned one, it's my understanding)
They are the standard options, (there is a 2.6petrol, I know nothing about them but I guess more power than the 2.25)
I think the v8 petrol was only fitted to stage 1 landys (of series era?) they are also a common conversion, they have similar mpg to the 2.25p but more power. But I think in that price range it will have been converted.
The 200/ 300tdi/di option, all of these in a series will be conversions, I think mpg is similar to the 2.25 d but more power and speed etc. (300 is more powerful) also the tdi/di thingy, same engine but some belive that taking the turbo helps to protect the gearbox from the extra power, and in theory the engine will last longer( however the 200tdi is generally accepted at will live for ever... If serviced...)
The 2.5n/a these will be conversions, it's basically the 2.25 but the crankshaft has a longer stroke, to get the extra 250cc (from memory) and is midway from a 2.25d to 200tdi
There is a 2.5 turbo (not to be confused with the 200/300tdi as they are a 2.5) this engine is a 2.5n/a with a turbo, I think there heads tend to crack under the increased pressure from the turbo (or maybe the block, whichever, I don't think they are as long lasting as others)
Before anyone tells me off for 'lying' etc, this is my opinion, and please correct me if I've made a mistake
