What the *&#? Glow plugs!?

So noticed on my (new to me) '92 110 200TDI that the first two cylinders (closest to the fire wall had glow plugs that were not attached to the wiring loom. So I ordered 4 new glow plugs. I fit the first two okay, but the remaining two cylinders wouldn't accept the glow plugs! They were "too long" and wouldn't sit in the cylinders. Here's a picture of what I wanted to put in there (the long one) and what I pulled out of those two cylinders---appearing to be the plug sheath and that's it.

What am I doing wrong here folks?

it looks like the other 2 are snapped in the cylinder

That's not what I wanted to hear....:frusty:

Won't be easy to extract, will it?

not if there still in the holes, can you shine a torch down to see anything

I'll have a look---perhaps I could extract them with a special tool---without taking off the head.

you maybe able to, or most good engine recon people have equipment to remove them in situ

Nope cheapest way is to just keep driving it until the remains blow out, best to wrap some heavy rag so it doesnt damage anything, this does actually work.
You can get special tools to remove broken glow plugs, look on youtube, but as its a one off probably best to try my suggestion, then if no good remove the head

Thought about that, but figured that the glow plug tip is probably stuck in there with a good bit of carbon. I'm going to try and pry it free with a long needle nose (if i can find it) and then go for the magnet if i can't retrieve it.

then again, i'm sure with 2/4 glow plugs installed i shouldn't have too many issues starting, even in the cold of winter

I'm with you all the way---going to give a go this morning on retrieval---and if not--gonna live with it for a while. I fear taking off the head will only lead to more pain/repairs/cash outlay!!
