What on earth is this?

One is obviously a fuse but no idea for what, the other is some wizardry for the EGR (blanked), but quite what the one with the rubber teat on it is has stumped me!



‘98 Def90 300tdi

I think they used a common loom in different models. So, it's probably a spare connection for a feature that isn't on your Landy. Mine's a 96 Def 90 300Tdi and I've got one of those under my centre seat. I've also got a connector that dangles down from behind my rear crossmember, which I think is the connector for the V8 petrol fuel pump. I don't actually know what that one is for though

As its connected to the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) and as far as I know it's not a legal requirement in this country, (on small engines) I think this connector would go to a shut off valve that re directs 30% of the exhaust gas back through the induction system via an intercooler. This is done on Euro 6 diesel engines if you have a diesel only fuel system. However if you have a vehicle that use's "Add Blue" (Euro 6 engines) this system is redundant.
As you can imagine, putting hot exhaust gas back into your engine will greatly reduce the performance even though going through an intercooler to cool the hot gasses down may help a little. Also the soot output from the exhaust is so bad that manufacture's found they had to put a bigger or and extra particulate filter on the exhaust to try and get it back to acceptable levels!
All this rubbish is added on to try and meet environmental concerns dictated by Governments in some parts of the world.

After much digging and use of VIN analysis (no history with my latest ‘Meccano for Grownups’ challenge) my end of line 300tdi had EGR with a control unit as well as a CAT, I say ‘had’ - the EGR gubbins has been deleted as has the CAT, so poke without smoke…..

Ahh - that bit is still a mystery…..

I think it would of connected to a solenoid on your exhaust system, induction manifold.
