Is best for my 4.6? I always use semi synthetic as it's never left in long enough to break down. I was looking at the users handbook and I think 10/40 is best for our climate but thought I'd ask

I searched a while ago when doing mine and most people seemed to recommend 10w/40 semi-synthetic. That's what I went with in the end.

I usually run semi-synth 10/40W, but with Eurocarparts giving QX fully synth away for peanuts a few months back with a free filter - I stocked up. Got a healthy stock of fully-synth Triple QX 5/40W and assortment of (quality) branded filters.

They are doing an offer now (promo code "MIDMONTH25") but it's (only!) 25% off plus filter, as opposed to the half price plus filter last time. Still, £17.99 for 5 litres of fully-synth oil and a free filter is nothing to be sniffed at. PS My engine idles more quietly on the 5W/40, there was some tappet noise with 10W/40 but the switch to 5W/40 has cured it!

Just done an oil and filter change and opted for 10/40 semi-synthetic. My engine is 160.000 plus and this seems OK, do get a little tappet noise with local driving but on a fast motorway it seems to quiet down, hope I am doing the right thing?? My dad always used to say to me that the oil, as well as lubrication was there to cool the parts and always recommended 5w/40 for my engine (when it was well under 90,000) but she (the car) is getting old and I just, well think 10w/40 is OK now. Any comments welcome.

I used Mobil Super 2000 10W/40 last change, which was about 2000 to 3000 miles ago. I could believe how much smoother it sounded.
Did the coolant at the same time.

i have just asked myself the same question i would have always used 10w30 in the diesels but i can get my hands on fully synthetic 5w30 for free in work but the old girl has 264,000 miles up on her, at the moment she is very sweet and does not burn oil do you think i should stick to the thick stuff or try the 5w30 don't want her to run away on the thin oil and blow herself up

Other than finding it's way past rings and valve stems, the thickness of the oil doesn't have that much other influence, plain bearings are lubricated on the hydrodynamic wedge principle - the thickness of the oil is irrelevant unless the big ends are so shot the oil gets flung out of them - in which case the engine's already on its last legs. So I'd say if you oil consumption is reasonable then I would be happy to use 5W/30.

I use 10/40 in my 4.0, Valvoline semi and change it every 4000 miles.

You can get triple qx 10/40 5 litres for 12.90 on Ebay at the moment

I use 5W40 (Diesel) full synthetic from whichever make is on promo, Total 9000, last year, Shell Helix this year. I change every 6K miles or just before winter if it hasn't done 6K due to the various problems that occur with a P38.
