What is this pipe and filter?

Any ideas what this tube is?

And should it be attached to this black 'U' shaped pipe? I can't see anywhere else it should go.

The rubber tube with the filter on is sucking air in.

Hi xant14,

Both are vents and should be left open to the atmosphere.

The black 'U' pipe is the IRD (Intermediate Reduction Gearbox) vent pipe.

The little plastic job is the turbo solenoid vent filter - yours looks well past it's sell-by date - get a new one - they are dirt cheap.

Nothing should be connected to the either of them.

Singvogel you are absolutly right that turbo vent filter looks as though it has never been changed and at a cost of about £3 well what can you say I for some reason did not see the second photo
 
Cheep as chips just bought one 11200 on mine so ready for a change also fitted silcon pipes yesterday The old rubber ones were very poruse will have to see what differance they make over the next few days Great site love it to bit some one out there always know the anwser

Hi , by the state of the turbo vent filter , i bet the crankcase breather filter is the same , if so it needs sorting asap , with the bmw vortex mod . theres plenty on here about it :)
