What is this bit?

Hi ya'll

Can you tell me what this bit does? The hose on the left is rotten like the cruise vacuum hose on discos. Is it important enough to need replacing?

I can't see where the other end goes apart from joining a much larger metal pipe under the inlet manifold.

Its the vacuum pump for the EGR. Replace the hoses, they cost nothing and a malfunctioning EGR is a known problem causer.

It's the control unit for the EGR valve. Pump is on front of camshaft. Shuts vacuum on and off as required to open or close EGR.
