What have you done to your Landie today.

3 hours, 2 lengths of stainless pipe, a mig welder and a holesaw resulted in this....









The TD5 exhaust is now 2.5" stainless right through to the side exit, where it's enlarged slightly to 3" to make it look a little more butch.

Not entirely happy with it just yet, I'll enlarge the hole slightly at the exit before I put on a D44 finisher. Probably get a clamp over chrome rolled trim to slip over the exit aswell to make it more pleasing to the eye. Sounds a bit bodge I know, but those chrome tail pipe ends aren't the best of quality, whereas the stainless pipe is. So the chrome exit will just slide over the top, and providing I taper the end of the 'real' exhaust it should all look nice and tidy, yet still be sturdy.

Don't half scare the kiddies now though.

Does it not knock the wing too?

Is that legal for MOT? i would of thought it would of have to come out on the O/s, so not to cover some pedestrian in plumes of black smoke as they walk by! lol

Couple of reasons really.

1. It's out of harm's way
2. It's higher up so will generally stop water siphoning back if the engine stalls when wading
3. It looks nice

Yes it does leave black soot on the rear facing of the wing, but not that much. A healthy TD5 doesn't really smoke that much. This one has a map on it and only really smokes on heavy load off boost, besides it's easy to wash off, it's only soot.

It doesn't knock against the bodywork because I've mounted it very securely with multiple hangers. Although the outlet does fill the hole alot so it may do under labouring, which is why I'll increase the hole size slightly.

And it is indeed legal for the MOT, or atleast it is at my testing station

I don't see any issues with it passing the MOT the standard exhaust on my 90 exits to the kerb side the same as yours but just a bit lower down.

ah!! thanks for that,, i just had a feeling it was something other than METAL. oh well,a couple of dozen more welding rods and a few more cans of gas should see at least the n/s done. then tackle the o/s. front and rear then drive the bloody thing before the next bit falls off. still love it though,,.(honest)

If you want a cheap alternative finisher for the hole try a Downlighter Bezel




Without the bulb fitted obviously they come in at about 73mm though some are a bit bigger

Raptor facia and carling switches fully operational.

Internal light / heater fan speed / x-eng thermostat with manual overide / rear window heater

2 x 12v sockets

Standard td5 hazard warning switch

I've read about plenty of people doing this mod and not having an issue with the MOT. I asked my local garage, and they said that THEY wouldn't have an issue with it, which was good enough for me.

Nice idea, never considered that. I have a D44 finisher on order now anyway, but if it doesn't look how I'd like it, I may give that a go, it looks tidy.

Has anyone thought about bringing one out where the reverse light is, I've always wondered when wading through deep rivers weather water is actually being pushed through a side exhaust due to current?

I'm sure when searching to see how others have done theirs, someone with a black TDI had a rear 'panel exit' setup in that position (allbeit O/S). I think it said powered by bio diesel above the finisher, try a search and it'll show up somewhere.

If the level of the water is high enough to meet the level of the exit, and the engine is running, the force of the exhaust gasses will keep water out. It's only if you stall the engine that the water could siphon back.

I OPENED ONE OF THE DOORS, PUT A GALLON OF FUEL INSIDE , LIT A MATCH THREW IT IN , AND WATCHED IT BURN.

Fixed the working light! They don't tell you that the lamp is not included!!! :doh:

Repaired exhaust hanging bracket, and got ****ed wet through!!

I've tried to do a rear exit, but because mine is a 200tdi and smokes a bit, the smoke is dragged through the rear door, I think thats why Land Rover make them all side exit to begin with

Honed it, Cleaned the Piston's up, New rings and Big ends and slapped the head back on it. Feels very nice when turning over by hand! Loads of compression and no tight spots

Tommorow, I need to put put the valve train back on (Push rods, rockers ect), Injector pipes, Manifolds, Strengthener plate, Oil Pump and Sump.. Fill it with some oil and cross my fingers Need's to be finished my monday...

Bought some red oxide primer for the chassis. Started cleaning the chassis of loose paint and surface rust. Going to be a long and dusty job.
