What have you done to your Freelander today

I drained the IRD & gearbox oils on the project 'Kay' today. I was really worried about the condition of the oil in the IRD as its hopefully going on 'Elle' to resurrect it as 4WD. I was preying it wasn't going to come out grey.... and thankfully it didn't :)

The drain plug has a reasonable amount of swarf stuck to it and the oil wasn't perfect - so I'm hoping its a while since it was changed and it would indicate all is well inside....

I wanted to keep the oils as the units will be coming off and going back on possibly a couple of times before (if) it goes back on the road - so I read up on how much oil to expect so that I could find suitable containers. Evidently the IRD is about 1L and the gearbox 2L. I had a couple of clean 2L milk bottles, so I thought I'd wing it on the gearbox and see if it all fitted. In the end, there was no more came out of the gearbox than the IRD! So I'm presuming there's a leak somewhere. It all looks pretty clean under the car, but I'll have to have another closer look.

...in most cases it is spam from Transfer Box Planetary Shims so do not worry .....

Thanks - it's lifted of the bottom of the box, it has build-in fans, and it's only 300W for charging camera batteries and my laptop. It's a full sine-curve converter, so it should also be more efficient (produce a little less heat). Lid for the box has plenty vent-grills, so hope it's going to be okay :)
 
Finally found this original cup holder on Ebay - have been looking for a LONG time for this! Installed it today - it's used, but in perfect condition :D

This is a Pic #18 from the auction advert for 'Kay'. When I clicked onto it, I knew this was to be my project car :)

I shall check in the morning (its 4AM and I've got up to watch the West Ham game then Rugby Cup Final), but I'm sure the casing on the one on Kay moulds around the back of the speedo housing/binnacle a bit.

Hope you will win the final! Played the game for a while many years ago, could run fast, but got "tired" of the big boys tackling me...

Maybe I'm missing a small part? The original rubber tray moulds around the speedo housing, did think about the cup holder not doing this, but it's okay - the joy of a real cup holder is so much bigger (compared to fiddling with the ones in the door). Big deal when driving and coffee at the same time is paramount ;)

By the way, following your updates on "Kay" with interest (mine is called "Rovie", named after the little rover in Area51, the animated movie...) :eek:
 
Here's what it looked like behind the upper plastic trim and the metal fixing bracket:

The rubber strip on the plastic trim had come adrift, I've bitten the bullet and ordered a new one:

Think I've saved it though, will be replacing the plastic top fixing inserts as well as the side trim fixings.

Propshaft is back on because I'm bored of WORLD ENDING UNDERSTEER.

Refurbed the VCU with new fluid, but haven't had a moment to take it out yet and make sure it's driving okay.

Yeah! Another raving lunatic going against the flow. Well done for giving it a go, have you tried the one wheel up test yet?

not today but yesterday,had the bottom dampening pulley, auto box,ird & rear diff oil replaced, should the weather improve any next weekend then its the brakes.....
 
fitted my original chipped key to the ignition barrel so I could use spare keys cut from blanks without chips in them, so now have two sets of keys and fobs instead off one, saving a small fortune. happy days.
 
?? The immobiliser makes sure the right key is being used to start the car - not a clone or hot-wire. The way I read it, you have basically told it not to bother checking - so you have turned it off.
 
It you need a "thing" to switch oft the immobiliser (yer does) which is removable from the car (like the keys/fobs)... and yer choose to fit said "thing" to the car so the immobiliser is permanently deactivated by default (or at least is given the right signal when requested/detected)... then you have bypassed the immobiliser and it will be considered useless as a security device. This changes the security set-up of the vehicle and I would expect compromise yer insurance if they think you have a working factory fitted immobiliser. You do, but it's not helping to protect yer vehicle as turning the ignition lock correctly would in theory be enough to start yer vehicle as the immobiliser signal is already there ready for when it's checked/read.
