What have you done to your Freelander today

This weekend's plan was to get the gearbox off 'Kay' so that I can examine/replace the clutch. Best laid plans and all, I didn't get that far.

I got the props off and the front section of the exhaust. I wanted to drain the oils before removing the IRD & gearbox. Being the avid LZ reader - I take the advice offered and went to loosen the IRD fill plug before draining it - of course it was siezed in there. The one on 'Elle' came out nice and easy when I did that, but the one on 'Kay' is a pig. It was obviously well locked in, I gave it a good few knocks with a hammer to try and loosen it - not to hard, cos I didn't want to shatter the ally case. In the end I had to just give it a good push with the 6 sided socket and the plug just basically turned to mush - so its knackered.

I'll be taking the VCU down to a workshop for them to drill and tap some drain holes, so I'll take the IRD along as well and get them to do something with the plug.

The irony of course is that I thought the nuts on the exhaust were going to be the b*****d ones, but plenty of WD40 and scraping the flakey rusty bits off so the socket fitted nice and tight and they all cracked off great with a good push on the 2 1/2 foot ratchet handle extension.

Winter is coming.

So I finally got my FBH working. To date it needed a new dosed pump (was a rusty mass), new burner unit (glow pin out of spec and mine isn't available separately) and while I was at it I fitted the new "more precise" temp sensor (JWL000020).

Tested it 3 times, first time got nice and hot, then I left it for a moment. Second time didn't seem to start heating but the water pipes were still warm. Left it for a bit longer. Third time started and heated again.

Hopefully that's it sorted.

Bought a new accessory for the Freelander, a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I now have a foot in both camps and have started wearing a 10 gallon hat and listening to country music.

This is a picture of us outside the terminal at Heathrow when we emigrated to New Zealand 12 years ago. We had a container on a ship en-route already and all those bags - but no place for my cowboy hat - so I wore it

I got the hat after going to a rodeo in Austin Texas and really felt the part! Austin's a super place, and once you get into your country music, you should go there, and go to the Broken Spoke Honky Tonk - even if you're not into the music - its a cool place.

Took it for an MOT and it failed! Not by much but got a bit of a task on to replace or re fabricate a new fuel tank craddle! Oh well onwards and under!

Well you look better in that hat than I do. BTW, if you remember earlier this year I fitted a synergy chip to my TD4 and said I'd say if it made any difference to the mpg. It's been on 6 months or so now, and due to the fact I'm sad enough to track every tank of fuel, the answer is, no chip is approximately 34mpg, with chip (setting 2) 38mpg. I'm well happy with that, and the extra umph is useful, plus it stops the auto box from searching when I'm towing, overall I'd recommend one if you fancy trying one.

That's a saving worth having - and the other benefits as well I'll bare it in mind! After months and months with a boringly reliable L Series and nothing to do on it, I've now managed to stack up a whole load of things to do with some maintenance bits (such as new discs) and the aquisition of my project K Series. When it goes boring again (and associated spending dies down) , I'll consider a tuning box

Also, today I learned that PG1 boxes are all interchangeable - all of the MG/Rover editions have the same mounting points on the cases that the IRD adaptor bolts to. Might be able to get something with a slightly longer fifth gear together.

Wheel spacers fitted. 'Fixed' the torn front cv boot with one of those glue together things for the MOT so will see how long the two part one will last. Handbrake cable on the passenger side had split and was seized so replaced that, got through the MOT with two advisories so pretty happy!!

just come back from a 3 day brake and she run faultlessly and at £1.03.9 a liter fuel was good too

Had some time to work a little more on my AUX batt. box (and 230V inverter) - now fitted with everything, but waiting for me to do the wiring....

Right here's what I've done lately.

2 new front tyres (4 wheel drive doesn't work anymore so don't need to be matched)
New front brake discs and pads
New Wheel bearing
New anti roll bar linkage (had to use angle grinder to remove the old one)
New in-tank fuel pump (ended up getting towed home when the old one failed on the way to a job interview)
***Do not own a Freelander 1 TD4 without breakdown cover!!!***
New Alternator
Fuel, oil, turbo and oil breather filters changed and engine oil changed (treated it to semi-synthetic)

To do
Tailgate window regulator cable thingy

Replacing the rear door/roof trim. I'd sealed it with silicon about two years ago but it was starting to look quite tatty and as I'm feeling flush decided to remove and replace with new rather than just reseal it. Water was starting to seep past the silicon and on removal it was looking bad, so just in time by the looks of it.

I'm not that flush now.
