Oh dear - does it sound serious? Silly question really cos any sound originating from the IRD is serious!

If you need to rebuild it, I can recommend the bearing/cooler/seal kit from One Stop Gearbox Shop

I rebuilt my IRD with one of their kits (cost about £150) and it has been running fine for a couple of years now. I gave the IRD & kit to a 'diff shop' here in Chch as I didn't want to bugger around pulling and pushing bearings and f****g it up - but I believe you have tools/experience to do that yourself. Their report back to me was that a couple of seals were missing from the kit that they had to source. The kit didn't contain new 'shims'. I didn't even consider them at the time and I don't know if the diff shop renewed them - I don't know how important they are.

Using one of these kits relies on your crown & pinion gears being in good nick (mine were trashed) - they're quite a common part listed on eBay/Landie stores, but have no experience of them as I rebuilt 2WD by removing gear on the end of the pinion. I'm looking to reinstate 4WD - so will probably be getting some though :)

If you need to replace the crown/pinion gears, the price starts getting closer to just getting a recon IRD and replacing it. Be careful though, I looked around and I wouldn't trust a lot of the outfits to do a proper job (eg replace the gears with new). In fact I wouldn't even trust them with my neighbour's Landcruiser!

Fitted MG F rear view mirror with lights in my 3 door, they come on when the doors are opened and the car is unlocked too. I also painted my drums, they were letting the car down with the scabby rust they were covered in.

Thanks :D it was my grandmas, she loved NZ. It has tiki in quotes on the back and then New Zealand green stone, or something to that effect

lol, I have another iconic Kiwi Souvenir Shop gift - a Ponga Vase - that was my grandmas :) Members of our family have migrated to and from NZ quite regularly over the last 60 years!

Hijacking the thread a bit here - so.....

Took the Freelander for its WOF (MOT) today - passed with flying colours. Mind you the guy who tested it must have pressed every button he could find cos the rear window was open when I picked it up - and the sun roof - does he not know that you should NEVER press the button to open the sunroof on a Freelander! It will probably leak like a sieve now.

I have managed to source a used IRD thats in decent condition, I have just ordered a new VCU (the one that was on had only done 30000 miles bought from bell engineering and is now no good  ) and a new set
of tyres are on the way. Just need to have a peek at the rear diff and see what its like. Fitting the IRD tomorrow so hopefully all will be well and sorted for my trip down to Goodwood and the festival of speed in a few days :D
Thanks for the info re rebuild I will be rebuilding the old one all being well

Changed the front right ABS sensor as its resistance was much higher than the others.
The old one came out very easily since it was only changed about a year or so ago....cheap chinese parts strike again. What have I replaced it with? another cheapo unbranded ebay special. Im not a fast learner.

Anyway, changed the sensor and within a quarter of a mile the three amigos went out and normal service is resumed.

Oil change, new filter, new turbo filter, new breather filter, blanked off egr, cleaned all hoses/housings, fitted new rear diff mounts..... 3 hrs well spent.

Tried a new wiring mod, for more low-end poke on the L series.

Worked REALLY well, but brings on the engine warning light once you rev it hard

You are going to have to write up these mods you do chief, I'd be interested to see whats going on, and I dont even have an L-series.
Although a Rover might be on the cards when the Escort needs changed.
