Hello,

My name is Chris, I'm born and bred in North East Scotland, work full time (plus any other hours available!) to keep the bills paid and food on the table. Since acquiring a Land Rover though, my finances have been especially stretched!

I bought the Landy a few months ago after realising that the 1999 Rover 220 my girlfriend and I shared would not be suitable when the forthcoming baby is born, plus with us both working one car was not convenient.

Fortunately after chatting with my dad about it he said that one of his friends was getting rid of an old Landy (1993 Discovery 1 200TDI 5-dr manual) that he planned to do up for off-roading, but due to health issues and a nagging wife couldn't fulfill his plans. I went to see it and I can understand why he wanted to do work on it - the current bodywork is in a pretty bad state, with a few patches of obviously spray-painted repairs, dents, scrapes and overall resulting in a Landy that looks like it has reached the end of its life. Mechanically though it is a different story. It's a 200TDI and with 102,000 miles on the clock the engine runs like brand new, gearbox has no issues and the clutch was replaced last summer when it had 97,500 miles (receipt to prove).

As it only had a few months MOT remaining I offered him £200 cash to get it off his driveway and he accepted.

It has given me no issues other than a leaking exhaust over the past few months, but that isn't to say it passed the MOT with flying colours. It needed some underbody welding, two new tyres (treads were fine but rubber cracking) and the aforementioned exhaust leak fixed. I know somebody who does automotive welding so got that done cheap, picked up a couple of used tyres with a couple of years life left in them from Gumtree and the only thing that really cost any money was the exhaust, which had to be replaced right back to the Cat. I decided to buy a new one to take away the possibility of any future leaks so that was the most expensive repair.

Overall it worked out cheaper than buying another vehicle and one maxed-out credit card later, the Disco is MOTd for 12 months and sitting on the driveway again.

With winter approaching I'm going to leave the bodywork as is and will focus on making it look better next spring when all the grit and salt has gone from the roads.

The only problem now is the bloody 220 which has a dying battery, slipping clutch and only a couple of months MOT left. I would love to replace it with a 2nd Land Rover and have two 4x4s on the driveway, but doubt that would be affordable. A Freelander (basically a Rover 200 on steroids) might not be a bad idea though, they can be picked up cheaply and have the same diesel engine as in the 220 I believe, which has never given us any issues.

Anyway, I'm rambling now so will shut up and take a look around the forum.

Bye for now!!
