What does Traction Control actually do?

I know my P38 has traction control (although how do I know if it's the 4 wheel or 2 wheel system? it's a Yreg).
Can someone explain what the system actually does when off road? How does it work, does it work in place of or in tandem with difflock/viscous coupling?

it works off braking system it brakes spining wheel to give torque to the opposite wheel which with out t/c would have traction and no torque ,its works seperate to viscous coupling which gives torque to both axles while still allowing some differentail for road use
