What do you this Diff is from

OK lets say there really is a big difference, well as the crown wheels are pretty much the same then the pinion on one must be quite a lot bigger / smaller than the other. That means 2 things, 1 as the gear bevel line must meet the point where the two shaft axis cross the gear angle must be different, and 2, the axis of the input shaft on one must be offset to the crown wheel compared to the other to mesh the smaller / bigger pinion.

Agreed - at which point the root stresses in the pinion (gear) tooth, would IMHO make the pinion very weak - very weak to the point of no chance of it surviving.
 
That would seem incredibly tall gearing though. What would the use be?

Apparently sought after for Cummins type engine conversions. I assume that these engines only rev to a couple of K RPM.

If you fit two different ratios diff's to a series and try to drive it in four wheel drive it will hop and jump around like a goddam barsteward [ ask me how I know this ] as they fight each other.
Do the same to a coiler and as long as centre diff is open it will drive in a normal way, at least until the centre diff fry's .
 
If you have the diff out of axle mark crown wheel and turn drive pinion till the crown wheel mark comes back to the same place count the turns of input.
The 4.7 to 1 is the ratio of teeth on crown wheel and teeth on pinion driving it..
If you turn input with halfshafts in you need to see both halfshafts turn the same amount in the same direction.
Try this calculator need to count teeth on pinion which is connected to drive flange expect 10 then teeth on crown wheel think 47.

Doh i think i've lost the plot counted the crown wheel teeth on the suposedly 2.3-1 diff and it has 47 teeth, i then fitted a spare set of halfshafts in the diff and re-checked and it a 4.7-1 so obviously i've missed something doing the original test :oops::oops:

:) - Yep, been there, done similar - bother not! - brain farts are part of being human o_O
