hi im new to this im looking to buy a disco but dont know what to get 200/300/td5 any help would be appreciated cheers dave

:eek:I'm actually looking for a disco 2 but I'm unsure what the difference is between the models i.e gs/es xs blah blah... Is there somewhere I can look to see the differences at a glance?
I would like the luxury of the es but without the hassle of leaky sunroofs

I've got a 300TDi that I use most days for work (I'm a gardener), have driven up to Aberdeen a few times and do a bit of greenlaning when I have the time.

Great motor, good on the long distance hauls, and when I'm not bashing down muddy lanes and I'm light with my right foot, I can get over 30MPG - even fully laden!

I'd go for a clean, late 300tdi without the sunroofs etc. You can be ery choosy if your budget allows. 1K will get you a reasonable high miler (that's what i got), nearer 2k will get you a very nice lower mileage car. I got a 96 low spec high miler 6 months ago (200k on the clock) and it's been great, all i've had to do is the lock springs, a new fuel sender and re solder the alarm spider. Gave it a full service as soon as i got it and it hasn't put a foot wrong since.

I agree with Pete and Dom id go for the 300tdi, had mine for 2 years, used it off road in a club for a year but giving her a break just now. When you go to have a look open the rear doors and look for rust on hte arch you see when you open the door. Also check the sills and rear body mounts and crossmember common areas to rust

See the 'what mileage has your landy done' thread to see what I've had to do to mine in the year I've had it.

Still, it only cost me £450..! (95 300TDi 5 door)

The missus and I sold both our cars and got a '95 300 tdi without sunroof. Paid £1250 for it on 104K There are loads about, just check for where they leak! We use it for everything including some pretty sedate off road work. Other than putting new floor in the back due to rust, it has been superb! I can't see us ever having another car!!

It does not matter what model you buy with a sunroof, it will leak. 99% of these leaks can be cured by sealing the sunroof frame on the outside of the roof. (mine has). The 300tdi is a real workhorse, a bit coarse but reliable, and economical, mine is, I tow a 1600 kgs caravan and get 25 mpg from it. It starts and drives superb but is not a ball of fire, that said solo it is is. I have now bought a TD5 with the BMW 5 cyl diesel and the diffrence is quite significant. It is more refined, more responsive,a better ride and more comfortable. The sunroof did also leak and is now cured. I love 'em both but the TD5 is more like a everyday car when doing motorway stuff, the 300tdi always sounded busy, which is was. Go for the best you can afford and always carryout a thorough roadtest. Dont be shy, be thorough.

The td5 is a landrover unit if i remember right! Nothng to do with bmw! But it is more refined and i found it a bit more economical as well. I would still go for a 300tdi though, the td5 is just a bit too fragile.

i bought a 300tdi n reg just before xmas cause my bmw was dangerous in the snow, best thing i ever done, totally hooked now, never been back in bmw only bummer is still have 2 years of finance on car!!kids and wife love the disco too wish i had bought one earlier.
