What brake fluid for a '71 series 3 109?

Hi

Pretty much as the title says, am I ok using Dot 4 in the series 3 109 1971?

Just going to try bleeding it, and didn't waqnt to put the wrong stuff in.

Dot 3 is the fluid originally used, but Dot 4 would be fine.

Whatever's the cheapest. About 12 quid for 5 litres from my local parts place was what I used last.

Cheapest is Dot 4, as we have that in stock! hehe

hi all, i have a 1971 2a swb, any difference regarding 'dot' to the 109?
just out of curiosity, whats the relivance of the different dots? thickness?

dot 4 is compatible with dot 3 ,later brake fluids are synthetic and not interchangeable

cheers for that, so if 3 and 4 can be combined, what is the difference between them?
as i've drained my series 2a of fluid and dont currently have any, should it be dot 3 or 4?

Thanks for this guys. Just got back from Halfords ,who told me I could only use DOT3 in my Landy but they don make it anymore. Bloody idiots! Guess I better scrap the Landy then. [emoji15].

I use dot 4, according to people in the s1 club that is the one to use, dot 5 will damage the rubber bits in old landy systems apparently

The only difference (that you should car about) with dot 3/4 is boiling point ! For 4 has a higher boiling point! And I am pretty sure both are 'natural' where as 5 and 5.1 are synthetic, the synthetic stuff will rot all the rubber in your system, also 5 and 5.1 have a even higher boiling point, but I think it's more for sports cars IIRC.

I would not by 5 litre as once open it starts absorbing water , unless of course you have a fleet of landrovers to deal with.

I use silicone dot 5 in my series 3 1974 , it doesn't corrode paint work and it is not hydroscopic, nor does it require changing, absolutely no issues these past few years and its not too expensive, MG B Hive in Wisbech Cambs sell it cheapest!! Regards. Chris

Chris7 did you do a complete flush or have you just added it to / topped up existing?

Viamphe it has to be a complete flush the mineral and synthetic brake fluid are incompatible with silicone so its important that there is no residue from the mineral or synthetic brake fluid before using silicone Regards. Chris
