afternoon people hope your all ok,

just a quick question, im looking at buying me batteries for the landy, basic run down of the trip for those that dont know im going to africa next year, but planning on staying in places for a few days at a time so i need battery power to last.

red and yellow optima batteries are way to expencive and have little power for my needs so they are out

ive been looking at 2 squadran leisure batteries (110amph) for about £140 each. but i was just wondering what you guys are useing and what you think of them.

thanks again

I'm still learning about the whole expedition preparation thing but I would have said two tractor batteries would be a good set up, slightly heavy maybe but would have a decent whack of power and you would most likely be able to get two for the cost of one of those fancy ones. Should both fit in existing location fairly well too.

how much electrical kit are you running when parked up? If nothing, just make sure you have a single decent quality new battery when you head off. If you're really worried get one of those small solar trickle chargers that goes on your roof. That'll keep things topped up when parked up.

If your bringing a winch, fridge, tv, pacman arcade machine, microwave, huge hi-fi system etc, then get the two batteries you talked about. AND a solar charger.

I am just using red and yellow optima batteries but I'm also new to this, so now after you have said they wont give you enough power I'm not sure I have the right one's!!

They will be as good as any start and deep cycle combination which is what you want if you a intending a split charge system with the leisure battery for running low wattage systems.

What ever batteries you have you need to work out your consumption level/ period to see if you are going to be OK .

If you find you have a fairly large shortfall, you can either go 3rd battery or small gennie, depending on what your results are its a how long piece of string thing.

I think I'll stick to the two batterys that seems to be a headache enough! I still haven't got me head round how to do this split charge thingy but I will when I get to it I'm a long way off that stage yet :(

When your ready to do the battery system set up Ill be happy to advise , fitted several. :)

Where abouts do you live instead of advising you can fit if you like :D only joking i'll take you up on that offer mind it'll be next year before i'll need any advice on that

it will prob be alot running an engel and pc! cant you just take a laptop and charge it now and again?

im planning on taking my laptop in a pelicase and charging it when needed. cuts down on space AND less power consumption.

i know i shouldnt talk about the compertition but landroveraddict.com have some great sections on overlanding. i will be venturing across there shortly :)

ive just got a dell axim x30 (i think) picked it up off ebay for £30 :) exc buy. the newer ones have wifi and go for alot more, mine is pretty basic but has a good processor speed. it works really well with memory map and tomtom. you can also pick up GPS mouse(es) for £35. these plug into the pda and through the software you have a gps plot with good accuracy. i use it constantly for greenlaning with maps loaded onto SD cards.

Hope this helps.
