Right so im pretty much ready to put in my Disco 200tdi into me defender!

Iv just been waying up the wiring before i go and rent out the engine crane.

Right so heres for the questions......

Im feeling quite intimidated by which wires go where and also what needs wiring! Over the years wires have been added and added so now in the engine bay it looks a bit like the inside of a telephone exchange box! Only theyve got mud and crap on them!

So, i know i have to wire up the alternator, starter and glow plug relay, but what else??

As you can see in the pics the wires on my engine have loverly shiney connectors on them however in my engine bay theres no such connectors that will fit these!

Is it just a case of cutting the connectors off and going from there?

Oh the engine before was a 3.5 V8 petrol! :(

P.s the picture with the relay in it is the glow plug wirering, I can see that one wire goes the the battery and the other wire goes off to the plugs however in the blue connector there are 4 smaller wires, are these the ignition and the glow plug light wires for the dash??

Cheers for any help :)

Cheers sean, would you just chop off the connectors andwire up what needed to be wired up?

Do you know what the white wire is in the vehicle harness?

Is a vehicle harness otherwise known as the 'loom'?

The white wire acording to lucas wiring code is for the starter solonoid/ballast relay - basicly i think it should power up the ignition coil for the petrol engine (which a diesel does not have)

For a quick reference to all wire colour codings on british cars etc check out

Lucas Wiring Colours - Searchable Reference

And yes a loom is a collection of wires........

In summary the wires you will need to connect up to the engine are:-

1) a 12volt supply from the ignition switch (the ignition dependant circuit - ie those that are on when the ignition key is turned to position II (not I) to the stop solonoid (alows you to stop the engine whe the key is turned off - won't start without it

2) Alternator - should just plug into the end of it if it is a standard alternator

3) Starter motor - Again should be a case of swapping over the main +ve connection from battery, and the solonoid trigering cable

4) Temp guage sender - you will need to either fit a V8 temp sender or change the guage as the voltage/temp ratio is different.

Thats it

Thanks very much mate thats just answered everything i needed to know!
And thanks to sean for the glow plug info!

Cant wait to get it started for the first time and see what everyone like so much about the 200tdi!

Will keep ya posted on how the wiring goes! :)

Ok...head spinning on this one, for some strange reason. - When it says 3 goes to the ignition switch, is this to the usual "ignition on" setting....or to the TD half-way glow plug position?
If the former, then the glow-plugs would come on every time ign was switched on - whether needed or not - but if the latter, then surely the loop would only be live when key is held - as in the old TD system - and that would negate the automatic-timer aspect, that the relay is there for in the first place?

if you are happy to have to count to 10 if it's warmish - 20 if it's cool - or 30 seconds if it's cold then don't put the relay in
