The P38 has gone. 3 breakdowns in as many months is taking the mick.

First one was a total loss of electrical power. Easily sorted but inconvenient as it was at night in the middle of nowhere. I mean, it could've done it on the driveway in broad daylight!

Second one was when the fuel line under the body parted company. Messy and not helpful as I was on my way to a Christening. Turned up stinking of Diesel. :D

And the strawe that broke the camels back was total suspension failur. 250 miles from home. Thanks to RAC and very good local garage it was a reltively cheap fix. The hire car wasn't though.

So, I've now traded her in for a nice sensible, reliable Passat estate. Ishall miss the comfort and luxuriant surroundings. Will I buy anothert Land Rover? Perhaps when the Jeep GC dies I'll look at another Disco, You never know. :D

The EAS was an easy fix. Apparently it was just a case of clearing the error messages and resetting the EAS computer doo-dah ?

It may well have been OK after that, but that's what I thought after the first glitch.

It has to be said that it wasn't the most unreliable vehicle I've owned. That honour goes to a Renault 30. :D

What year was your P38 Martin?

Mine broke down 3 times 2 recoveries and one I fixed roadside and then replaced the part (starter motor)

It now seems ok and has been quite a good drive but it has cost me over 3k to renovate plus the initial 3.2k purchase.

I also looked at the Passat and also a new A3 with all the bells and whistles but I have enjoyed the P38 as a very comfy drive.

I had a new Defender that I just could not get on with, drafty.......yes it was new and so uncomfortable, plus I found it not great for gear and those crazy folding rear seats are not worth a carrot, so the Range Rove was supposed to be a cheap 4 x 4 alternative and I liked the shape.

Good luck with your Passat good choice.

Keith I have replaced all my airbags what other maintenance procedures are there on the EAS?

Replace Valve block O rings and replace the dryer. Height sensors too if you are rich. Inlet filter and exhaust silencer.

It was a '99 with low-ish mileage. 95K. Full service history too. Just goes to show. :D

The Passat is a 'safe' choice. Not the most exciting or glamorous drive but solid and reliable and 50+ MPG. (I do like that)

I've got the Jeep for leaping around the countryside and towing duties and in the 2 years I've had it, hasn't cost a penny in breakages or parts. Just consumables and a service every year. Awful road manners thouigh unless there's 3 1/2 tons hanging off the back. :D

Full service history means sod all. It's had the oils changed is mostly what it means.

Had mine 12 months now and has only let me down once, (split hose ) and that was my fault for not changing it sooner. Yes, i have spent a bit on it and have had some major EAS niggles but with the help on here there is nothing i could not manage to do, besides what else would i do at the weekends. Plus i love the look of the p38.

A fuel line could go on any 14+ year old car!

Let's hope you bought an old 1.9PD Passat because the later ones are one of the most unreliable cars out there. Fuel injection loom meltdowns, injector failure, water pump failure, cam belt tensioner failure, oil pump drive failure - the list is endless of expensive and sometimes terminal Passat maladies.

I used a Passat as a taxi, took her up to nearly 300k before getting rid. Injectors were a problem and very expensive. Dual-mass fly wheel only lasts 5 mins as well. Nice cars though.

'How do you folk put up with them?'.....

Because we dutifully accept their failings and yet still love them....

Because we understand the fact that they are unreliable....

Because we appreciate the fact that they are not a conveyance but a hobby....

Because we made a conscious and informed decision to accept the costs involved in repairing them....

Because they bring a smile to our faces when we look at them and drive them....

Because despite the fact they will drain your bank balance and cause relationship crisis' we know it is not the cars fault but the underpaid, under appreciated and under funded staff/workshops who built them were only given so much from the 'Grown Ups' above them causing continuous cut backs and lay offs....

And lastly and most importantly....

Because they are a Range Rover...and nothing comes close!

That last bit is pure fantasy Ant, BMW were not short of development cash, nor were Ford nor are TATA. The problem is bad management and out of control electronic development departments.

You fixed yours yet?
