Ive only owned the D2 TD5 for a few weeks and only done short journeys to and from work etc..
She has 202k on the clock so well used.

The ole lady wanted to go shark diving in scotland, so this was the first long trip the D2 has done in my ownership, so all levels checked and of we go (oil and water in the boot cos you never know)
And she did the 380 mile round trip without any fuss or complaining ( the car not the ole lady), 60mph cruise control on sit back and enjoy, I could think of worse places to be fairly quiet and comfortable, I brimmed the tank before leaving and brimmed it again when we got home and it works out at 37 mpg (Cannot not be bad for a 200k disco).

The only thing that needs looking is it has a slight transmission whine done this since I bought it not got any worse and it is very slight starts at about 60mph and is only there when the trans is underload, its that slight its not worth worring about until it starts getting worse, might treat the transferr box and gearbox a fluid change and I know it wont fix the whine but it wont do it any harm, Will give the boxes a wash off anyways as it has a oil leak its clean oil and looks and feels like ep90 so probs the trans case.

Sounds good... a couple of weeks after buying mine (2001 TD5 with 160k) I did a 320 mile round trip with no issues at all - looked after they're pretty sound engines. Since buying the car in July i've barely lost any water or oil (must check again this week as its been a couple of weeks since i last looked). In fact the drive under the landrover is still clean which is better than my previous Volvo managed!!

I do miss Cruise Control (although its a fairly straightforward add-on so its on my to do list) for the long motorway journeys. I tend to get mid 30s in terms of MPG but then I cruise at 70(ish) on the motorway rather than 60 as life is too short...

Hi Lee, Glad your a happy bunny! Make sure you use good oils especially MTF 94. If it's a manual box of course :)

Hi Lee
Check your transfer box oil level as well. Uses "normal" gear oil
Due to both oil seals/output shaft bearings failing (thanks for nothing Ashcroft!) Im topping mine up monthly!
60-65 is a good cruise figure.
Mines done 18K miles since Dec 2015!
700 miles in a day is not a stretch, wish I had a better stereo though!

sounds like u had a good trip

think it's always nice going on a long trip, but always seem to have it in the back of ur mind, what if , have i checked that etc :D

think 200,000 miles its just run in ,

am looking forward giving mine a good run

just sat at 60 to many speed cameras up that way so sitting at 60 is good for fuel and makes a stress free trip,

are the manual boxes on these silent normally? like I said mine is only a slight whine with the wireless on low you cant hear it

Fair enough... was thinking Dual Carriageway / Motorway for 70 by the way... not the remote A roads of Scotland!

I've not heard any noise from my gearbox over the sound of the engine.... but then although my Disco is on 160K, the gearbox was replaced by the previous owner and has only done around 20K. Personally i'd just keep an eye on it, and keep an eye on the oil levels in the gear and transfer boxes.

Which reminds me - must check mine at some point soon!

Know what you mean! But as long as you check fluids at least weekly, it should be ok. (the owners book says, check oil level every "250 miles"!!)

Thats not too onerous under normal circumstances - probably once a fortnight for me at the moment. Although last weekend I did 280 miles without going further east than Bath or further west than the Severn. Checked the fluids daily on that one as was doing some serious hill climbs with heavy trailers.

Looked again yesterday - my oil level still hasn't moved. I think coolant level has dropped slightly but that could have been that I was parked facing uphill on the drive and i normally park facing downhill.
