Right, cheers for the advice so far, i was talking to my mate's dad last night and he said that i should get nothing smaller than 170 amp.

I aint bothered about a dedicated supply as long as it is gona do the job!

Practical Classics Magazine did a welder review a while back and the best buy came out as the: SIP migmate 130 turbo

Good for light body panel work but gutsy enough for 6mm steel. I have got one of these and the results have always been good for a hobbyist, However I dont use it every day so cant comment on heavy use. The only drawback is the wire feed speed which can fluctuate or stick if you get any tightish bend in it while working.

i got a gasless off here a few months ago and its ok saves on gas altho my mum works for boc lack of thought on my part but most of my welding is done outside so the gas is not there so it dont get blowen away

the clarke /sip type are ok for small useage and small jobs, but as been said, better to buy a SH oxford or boc.
about the same price as a new clarke and far far better.
an oxford/lincoln type will last a lifetime. ive seen oxfords etc sold for 10 quid!

Hi, about buying a mig, just to let you know to look at the duty cycle of the machines if you are comparing different models, usually at the highest amperage the duty cycle will be as low as 20%, the higher the better really. A180 amp machine or bigger will cope well with most things without any trouble, only if you are using the machine at the highest settings continuously it will cut out after a while for 5 minutes or so(this is where the higher duty cycle makes a difference), same as the air cooled small stick welders (not the inverters)
Hope that is of some help:)

Thread revival time :) i'm after a mig for patching up the body work on the disco, gas one peferablly any ideas? have just got this off ebay but from the play i've had with it, it isn't looking too good

if you are planning on doing quite a bit of welding, don't go for a hobby one, although on the welding forums they really do rate the clarke range out of the hobby type MIG welders...i had the money for a half decent hobby one, but went for an older good branded welder, if it's an older one, the chances are that most of the parts inside can either be rebuilt, or replaced, rather than binning a hobby type one.

go for a good qaulity second hand one, porta-mig, murex, brands like that...take a look at this link, it will help you decide

MIG Welding - The DIY Guide

it's a great site, with good information

atm the welds don't seem to be too strong but all i want it for atm is to rejoin the arch back onto the c pillar on the disco and a friend wants to use it to build a roof rack for his l200 i want to replace the tip and the shroud any ideas on where to get this? also the wire liner but i'm not sure if you can get them for this welder any ideas?

the ones machine mart sell (clarke branded), usually are quite a good fit for most hobby type welders, try there, the SIP one i used to have had a clarke one fitted, and it just needed to be trimmed to the correct length...they do tips & shrouds too :)

regarding the strength of the welds, there are numerous reasons what the cause could be, but if you look on the MIG forum, i bet you'll find the answer to that

Arc welding is tricky for body panels but possible (have had to get used to it since my mig packed up)

306 sam what problem are you having with your welds? Do they look ok? Are you getting enough penetration? there could be a simple fix before you go looking at buying a new machine.

So would you think I'll be OK with the arc welder? Not got any experience, but I'm a quick study. I only want it for little projects, a hobby tool really. I'm about to buy it, just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.
