Yes if you have one big enought to meet the electric requirements for the power supply. It is no different than wiring up for garage use just have to meet the power requirements. Should have a tag telling the power requirements
 
I'd be VERY careful because an underpowered generator can blow the boards in welders. Work partner had this problem when he inadvertently plugged into a lead on site which was connected to a genny - result..... ruined Murex :(
 
The little 1.5KVA honda toy sets wouldn't stand a chance, but something along the lines of the 1250KVA twintub CAT sets we take along to festivals wouldn't even notice the load.

You do occasionally see ex-military welding generators appear on ebay, These are designed specifically for the short-duration impulse loads a welder presents to the genset.
 
You dont mention if its a transformer or mosfet(inverter) based welder both have a diferent power factor.
5 kva will run a 130 inverter running 2.5 rods only , the problem being strike up surge, 7 kva up will run it properly
