Hi all

Went out in today my 110 Defender CSW 2.5 TDI 1991 on a H Plate (UK),
anyway went to pull out a junction in first gear and the revs died, so I
dipped the clutch. The moment I did the revs came back up, I lifted the
clutch and away we went, five mins later did same thing again and then
nothing for the next ten miles and it hasn't reoccured. I was definently in
first gear.

Thoughts of maybe water in the fuel or dirt?

Any ideas why this happened and should I be looking for something more
sinister?

Yours

Andy

Could be a lot of things, but your guess of dirt or water in the fuel is the
most likely. I would be inclined to change the filter and drain the water
trap if fitted. If either of these show a lot of water or dirt cleaning out
the tank may be indicated - not easy as I don't think any 110s have a drain
plug.
I seem to remember that that engine has an in tank electric fuel pump, and
the same symptoms could be caused by the pump on its way out, or a problem
in the power supply to it, either wiring, ignition switch, or tank earth.

Simlar on a Rangie of similar age turned out to be a holed fuel pick up pipe
Allows air to be sucked in.

Other symptom was prolonged starting after being stood a while as the fuel
had managed to syphon back into the tank.
