Weber Carb Solenoid Test? Electrics Help!!

Hi Everyone!

Had a bit of a bad day today!

I was simply going to put a new coil in my 2.25 Petrol 90!!

Anyway being an idiot I connected it up wrong.
See my picture. It shows the correct wiring, but when I connected up I put wire 1 on together with wire 4.
The result was that when I tried to start her I melted wire 4 that goes into the dizzy and points.

Realising my mistake I put the old coil back on and fixed the melted wire and changed the condenser on the dizzy.
Now when I try to start her i get sparks, but I don't seem to be getting any fuel hence she is not running.

So on my diagram wire 2 goes to the solenoids on the Carb. I'm wondering if i might have destroyed the solenoids?

My question is how can I test them? Or should I just replace them and see what happens!!??!!

The only other thing I have not replaced which may need replacing is the condenser on the end of the blue wire see second photo. Can this be tested? I would just replace it, but I don't know what it is? I cannot find it in the parts manual?

So you can image how stupid I feel and how any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yep! the solenoids on the carb.
I’m now thinking about just removing them and connecting them straight to the battery and seeing if they move!?!

The solenoids are working. Turned out to be a bad connection.
Not out of the woods yet, I think there is a problem with the fried points I patched up. Got to wait for new points to arrive before I go any further...........
 
Hi! Just to let you know we are all up and running again!
I needed a new coil and points! Thank goodness I did not burn out the loom!!!
For interest, I was able to see if the solenoids on the carb were operating by listening to them with an auto stethoscope. Really useful bit of kit! And interesting listening to different bits of the engine!

Sorry to jump in on this oldish thread, but I've just got hold of a 2.5 petrol with the weber carb with the 2 solenoids, If you have time, can you please tell me what these solenoids are connected to, ie when should they be powered on and when not?
Also if you have a photo of the installed carb it would help me greatly to be sure I connect up the various parts correctly.

Thanks very much! greatly appreciated, I've got to wait for a new gbox to arrive before I fit the engine, but can't wait to get rid of the rattly 200tdi in my '85 110, I've also got a 1960 2a with 2.25 petrol and it's so quient and smooth compared to the tdi.
So, no rush for the pics, but looking forward to seeing how these strange solenoids are connected.

Sounds like you have a couple of great vehicles. I have a 90 with a 2.25 in it. We have owned it since 1986!!!
The engine is fine for around town and off roading. No good for speed!
So these solenoids. I was told that the front one closes the vent on the float chamber when the ignition is on.
The one on the side is the fuel cut off. So when the ignition is on it opens the fuel and when off closes the fuel (Idle cut off). Apparently stops run on.
You should note there are two versions of the weber carb. Some early 2.25 petrol models had mechanical fuel pumps. These had a carb with just the idle cut off on the side. Then the later models had electric fuel pumps and these had the carbs with the two solenoids.

As for the wiring, looking at mine. Both solenoids are powered by a white wire coming from the + terminal on the coil. as simple as that.
The wire comes off the coil goes into some heat protection to get it over the top of the engine, splits into two inside the protection. It comes out as two white wires, one to each solenoid! See pics.

Thanks very much, I never fail to be impressed by how helpful people are on these forums, and the pictures are so helpful, a thousand words etc.
Yes, my carb has both solenoids, so good to know they are connected in common with ign power on.
I assume the black rubber elbow / pipe next to the lower solenoid is the vac advance? looks like it.

I just noticed the heat shield above the starter in you pic, mine doesn't have this, so something to make while waiting for the gbox to arrive.

Just as a bit of info, mine (series) has a mechanical fuel pump and no solenoids.
I suppose i can see where a solenoid on the float chamber comes in to play but i don't see the point in one on the fuel supply.. the reference to run on doesn't stack up as there will be plenty of fuel in the carb to allow run on, whether the fuel supply was cut or not! Or does it close the connection between the float chamber and the jets? That just sounds like something waiting to break
