Starting to work through some of the issues with my new series 3 2.25.
It has a Weber 34ICH fitted and starts and runs Ok, but the choke doesn`t appear to do anything. You can start it from cold with little or no choke and even with the choke pulled the tick-over is not raised so you have to keep it held on the throttle.

Also it doesn`t have any airfilter fitted just a piece of plastic drain pipe that passes over engine to where the original filter would have been. The previous owner had tried to fit a V8 engine but gave up and stuffed the original engine back in, but omitted to reinstall any of the bits he cutout to accomodate the larger engine.

What type of filter do you think I should use with this carb as I have read it suffers from icing-up so would a K&N be OK, if anyone has one for sale it would be appreciated.

Sounds like it might be running quite rich then!

There are two parts to the choke on these. A rotating butterfly thingy operated by cable (A) and a little rod (C) that comes down from a cam (B) on the end of the butterfly shaft that pushes down the throttle stop. (Sorry if my description is a bit crap but I don't know the proper words). Anyway it sounds to me like that might be missing?

My 2.25 will start in the cold ok without the choke but will tend to misfire, cough splutter and generally let you down when you try to accelerate without adequate choke. Too much when it is warm seems to have a fairly negative effect too so I'd give yours a check over.

Thanks for info Dominicbeesley, will have a look tomorrow. The thing I don`t understand is what raises the tickover, but if it has got bits missing that would explain alot.
I will try and find the colour tune that I`ve not used in years and check the mixture setting.

The wire (C) pulls up as the cam turns and moves an extra idle speed stop at the bottom. I think it's an extra cam at the bottom. On mine this doesn't start to engage until you've pulled the choke about half way out.

Regarding icing, I've got a stock Land Rover oil filled filter and I've run it all winter without any trouble.

Managed to get a look at it today, the wire (c) was moving but not enough to raise the tickover. Reassembled linkage and it seems to work now.
Not played with mixture as friend advised not much point as no airfilter fitted. Will have to source new one, tempted to go for a K&N as not much left of the mounting point for original.
Thanks again for your help, I dare say I`ll be back on here soon for more help.

Maybe the carb is too worn to keep its adjustment my 2A was doing the same thing with the choke not working at all which suggests it`s always runnung to rich.I gave in trying to keep adjusting the carb and splashed out on a new Webber about £80 No more probs now choke works fine and it goes much better up hills.
Best of luck.

Mine had issues with fuel mix, the adjuster did little or nothing, and the while thing drove me bananas, i gad bought a service kit, and cleaned thoroughly, it was working fine till I changed the engine (same 2.25) and although some folks say its better fuel economy, and power, I prefer the look of the zenith anyway, better proportion, so I put the old zenith back on..
But good luck to you, mine also had a K&N on it..
