Hi guys;

just bought my first defender. 2001 TD5, good condition, just needs some simple tlc. My first task will be maintenance of the chasi. I intend to get under it wire brush of any surface rust and hammerite the chasi.

My question is, is hammerite as good a preservative as waxoil? the reason i ask is i would like to pick out parts of the chasi in different colors ie, chasi black, springs yellow steering gards silver. i personaly dont like the way waxoil looks on the chasi, and with a 2'' lift on it, it would be in line of sight. so would prefer to preserve the chasi on a yearly basis in this way.

ps. could i also do the underside of the tub and wheel arches in this way.

your feedback much appriciated.

one of the most pleasing aspects of defenders imo, especialy reasied ones, is the fact that you can actualy see the construction of the and workings of the steering, suspension and chasi. it seems a waste to cover all this in waxoil, although not taking away the importance of preservation. which has prompted this question.

now this is just my personal preferance. others may not hold such views, which is fine. I would most greatfull to anyone with an answer.

For chassis protection hammerite paint is NOT a good way to go, Hammerites waxoyle is the way to go. However, things like the springs and steering parts can be done in paint because to be honest they don't really rust the same as the chassis, in that most of them are solid lumps of hardened steel.

Paint just doesn't offer the same protection as waxoyle as it chips easily - when under a landy anyway.
