Hi all,
Still looking for the possible fault with my cold below and hot above the thermostat on my 95 4.6 HSE.

No water loss and coolant clean as a new car.
Checked thermostat and it appears to open between 80 and 90.
Heater functions well.
Hose squashy with pressure after a decent run but not over hard.
Water runs back in small return hose to coolant tank, More than a dribble but not a full squirt. (When engine is running)

Flushed through all pipes from and to thermostat with hosepipe and hosepipe in top of rad with cling film wrapped around, tap on full and

Now I am lost, Still cold below thermostat after 10mile run.

1995 4.6HSE Petrol Only

Any Ideas?

Could be the radiator is restricting free flow or maybe water pump. Some years ago I replaced a water pump where the impeller blades had completely disappeared, only the boss was left!!
As you probably know, the radiators on the P38's are prone to cause problems albeit with overheating so I would check the pump first as that's the cheapest fix if needs be.

Hiya Red..The water pumps are a throwaway item-non serviceable at around £35 they are not all that expensive. Make sure that you have a new gasket to hand before removing the pump. Check the condition of the impeller when it's out, if you are not losing water then it's safe to say that the bearing will be okay-that's the part that usually wears and allows water to leak from behind the pulley.
If yours is a V8, remove the top fan shield and the fan (36mm spanner)-don't forget it's a normal r.h. thread-looking in from the front move to the left to undo..you should then have access to the water pump bolts, which are of different lengths, so remember where they go.

Thank you,
I have puchased the replacement antifreeze from Landrover, Now pink and organic LSTC50529.
I will remove and check pump as I have also puchased a replacement gasket.
I have flushed all the bits again, Radiator, hoses from the top of the thermosat, with the coolant bottle cap on tho force water through the matrix and all run freely.

So I will now try to remove and inspect the pump.

Regards Fred

Hiya Fred...... When you remove the pump, if all looks good and providing you have bled the system ok & no improvement, that just leaves the rad. I suggest that you don't put the anti freeze until you are happy that everything is ok.
Let's take it one step at a time and keep us posted on the water pump check.:behindsofa:

Hi Irishrover,
Thank you very much for all your help so far.

Maybe I am worring too much but this old girl has only done 55k and is still in very good condition and I don't want to be the one to let her down.

Can't get the pump off yet, I dont have the correct spanner so I will scout around for one.

Replaced all the hoses filled and tested the system, I took it out for a short run and all seems ok exept for cold at bottom and hot at top of thermostat. Coolant tank temperature reads approx 80 deg.

Heater blasts hot air up and down so I think the heater matrix is ok at present

No overheating Pointer just a touch over the vertical.

I will replace the pump when I get the spanner and the pump arrives, the local supplier wanted £166 plus vat for the genuine one.

With the rads on these Rangies blocking up, Do they completely block or will water still pass through as mine drains as fast as I try to fill (when the bottom hose is off) ?

This one is a strange problem for me as I dont seem to have any problems apart from the cold bottom of the rad.

If the pump does not sort it then I will order a new rad.

I cant get my mind around the problem, getting old I think.

Regards Fred

Fred...You can get a new pump for loads less than that. I paid £40 for mine over 3years ago when the bearing in the old one was shot and leaking like a sieve and it's not given me any problems-look at Rimmers, Paddocks, Craddocks, Island 4x4 etc.
Problem with the original rads was that the tubes were quite small in section and coked up, also an internal baffle is known to collapse. Later rads have larger tubes which improve flow.
I know exactly what you are going through from first hand experience and was having the same problems as yourself plus a slipped liner which I feel was unrelated. After fitting a new engine I was shocked to still have an overheating problem. Flushed all through, bled many times, new pump to no avail. Finally and reluctantly spent £150 on a new rad.....problem sorted. Hence my suggestion to try the lower cost options first just to isolate the cause rather than plunge in with a full wallet. The temp gauge reading, can vary slightly from car to car and being slightly over midway should not give cause for concern.

Thanks John,
Youre right I have found one at Island 4x4 for £29 plus £7 delivery.
I have dealt with them before and found them to be very competitive and trustworthy.

Should be with me soon.

Once again thanks for all your help

I will let you know how I get on

Regards Fred

Hi Guys,

Just started getting a heating problem with my Vogue 4.6 Range Rover with 40,000 on clock, petrol driven.

Warning light went into red a month ago and I stopped to allow engine cooldown. Refilled with coolant and water and it was fine until yesterday when went into red again on journey. Luckily I had filled two bottles of water to enable me to continue.

I now want to flush the radiator out and refil with correct coolant.

I am not an enginner like m,any of you. Can I flush it adequetely by sticking hose and running water into the expansion tank. I cannot find any drain tap to the rad, is there one.

Now I know I should go to a dealer but I resent paying for the girl who welcome you etc etc. and the hefty bill that follows.

Please any guidance for a beginner or should I just swallow the cost of getting someone else to do it.

Many thanks

Hexagon plastic drain plug in the centre of the lower tank of the radiator, should be able to see it clearly when you look underneath the car at the front. The plug has an "O" ring on it (Sealing washer). Give it a good flush through and refill with 50/50 mix of soft water and anti freeze mix. Follow instructions on RAVE for procedure for bleeding the small top pipe on the radiator and refilling.
