Checked rad, thermostat, and then this.
Think this might be the cause of the overheating...:rolleyes:
What worries me is that I can't find the missing bit of plastic.:eek: Is this going to get wedged in the cooling system somewhere and cause problems? Or perhaps the plastic is breaking up so much it'll just dissolve away:) some chance...

There are some sort vanes or channels lead away from where the pump goes in - stuck in there.
I'm away for another rake about, see if I can find the last bit
 
I can't see why anyone would ever countenance a plastic impeller because it is such a hostile environment and critical to engine health.
 
Looking about for a replacement it seems that most of them are. Going to all this trouble I'll put a metal one in if I can get one. Have to wait till tmoz, make some phone calls.I agree tho'.(should be bronze;))
 
Thanks. That'll be the one then. Perhaps when the remaining bit of crappy plastic comes back round it'll mash it up and sort that problem too!

I have to tell you that the metal water pump is less efficient than the plastic one, if you look at the pump vanes you will see why. It's OK except in extremes of temperature, unlike the plastic pump, over 41C I found I had to rev the engine a little to stop the temperature creeping up, I do not have a viscous fan fitted though.
 
Right. Well I don't have a viscous fan either. That's given me pause for thought. The only time that the temperature goes up (usually!) is when sitting in traffic on a hot day. That is, at idle or low revs. So probably not so good with a metal one. And I know the idea of plastic is not good but I wonder if that might have been even the original, that is 18 years old. In which case it has lasted quite well!

Mine was also 18 year old when it let go:eek: Under 38C, I see no temperature rise under any conditions, the aircon fans cope admirably even with the metal pump. As it never gets that hot in the UK you should be OK.
You could always fit an additional fan as Mark Piercy has done, or fit a GEMS V8 RAD fro improved cooling.
I must admit, I'm tempted to go back to plastic, but I'm unsure of the quality of after market ones and not prepared to pay JLR's price.
 
There's a Quinton Hazell one at Bearmach that I'll have a look at... That used to be a good make.
Its been pretty hot here recently (even in Scotland!). Well 31 anyway...
 
Yeah, I know. Grundig, Roberts Radio. I was sorting out my stereo the other day and found that my ('British Designed and Engineered') Tannoy speakers were made in China...:rolleyes:
 
At last! The carriers 'lost' the first delivery so Bearmach sent another one out yesterday. I eventually got a pump this morn. Quentin Hazell one doesn't have metal impeller after all. Got it all back together and just then the carrier arrived with the first one.:rolleyes:
Last time I had airlocks on refilling so this time I put the front up on ramps and (Datatek's suggestion) put a clear pipe on the rad expansion outlet. Strung it up high and did the re-fill. No probs. It seemed to take a long time before the thermostat opened but it was venting air all the time.
Cooling is now so good that even sitting ticking over it didn't bring the fans on. Just finished when the rain started...:)

Well done. Raising the front and using a long pipe for bleeding the cooling system is detailed in the Toyota MR2 manual, that's where I got the idea.:)
