Right the time had come to change my P gasket on my 300tdi. I've been topping the coolant up every week, and now have a long distance drive planned in a couple of weeks so want to get it sorted before I go.
I have searched the forum and found some good pictorial guides and consulted the Haynes manual and have found some differing approaches.

Some say you need special tools, and others say you can get around these issues with 10mm drill bits and blocks of wood ?

Some say you have to lock diesel pump and crank and some say you don't.

Some say remove Fan, some don't
Can anyone advice a keen novice on the do's and don'ts and the easiest way to change the P gasket ?

94 Discovery 300tdi

Any advice welcome
Thank you :)

you do have to remove the fan but you don't go any where near the timing belt and don't need to lock the timing up at all.
the water pump is at top front right of the engine as you look from the front of the car.
do another search mate

it's really easy mate even i can do it:rolleyes:

there's loads of threads on here covering the 300tdi water pump renewal, it's remembering to make a template for the water pump bolts coz the bottom 3 are much longer and need to go in the right hole, draw around the new gasket on a piece of cardboard;)
it's just a case of removing the pulley's from w/pump, ps/pump and take them off along with the alternator, and making sure you have a good socket set that won't bugger up the locktighted bolts

Thanks Nickh75, it's more the P gasket that bothers me , Am i right in thinking I have to remove the alloy block that sits behind the water pump to get to the P gasket ?

yes, you are right, but its nothing to be bothered about...just read the threads on here that explain it...its straight forward

the worst part is getting the water pump bolts in the right order and thats why i mentioned the cardboard trick,
other than that it's an easy straight forward job that should take about 3 hours thats if you roll a fag every 5 mins go for 7 craps and drink loads of tea:rolleyes:

oh thats sounds like me:doh:
