Hi All

Can anyone tell me how difficult it is, on a scale of 1-10, to replace a water pump on a 1997 300 TDI (no air con). There is a bit of coolant dripping around that area and it squeeks intermitently so it looks like it's cuffed. I had a read at the Haynes manual and they're talking about removing the fan with a special spanner and God knows what all which sounds like a step too far for me. Ignoring the Haynes manual it doesn't look that complicated so if anyone has any tips they will be much appreciated.

cheers.

Thanks for that - looks like I can do the water pump without removing the fan which was my main worry - think the flushing job looks beyond me though.

cheers

Watch the bolts as they can get realy rusty!!! Somtimes you have to heat pump caseing up to get them out with a blow torch.

A blowtorch !!!!! It's beginning to sound like the disaster I was hoping to avoid. Will have a look at it later and see if the bolts will move - if they don't it could be a garage job

Not going to prove anything as a the bolts in question go through waterways and rust up on the inside, they come undone but because of the build up of rust on the bolt wont come out through the bolt hole in the waterpump and if you force it breaks-hence a little heat on offending buggery bolt hole makes it expand and "Hey presto!" one bolt out with out disaster;)

Oh and by the way the last time my pump started dripping/howling it blew up within a week, dumping all coolant and very nearly fooking mi engun!!!!!!!!

OK Folks - had a look at the water pump. There's not a lot of room to work with the fan in situ. So here are my final two questions before I decide if it's a £30 pump from Ebay or a garage job.

1) How do you release the tension on the belt in order to remove the pulley on the front of the waterpump ?
2) Has anyone done this job without removing the fan - I don't have a shifter slim enough to fit if it has to come off.

cheers.

Hi, did mine a while back, I've got massive hands so yes you can do it without taking the fan out, also replace the gasket behind the water pump as that may well leak later on as did mine, two or three bolts go right through to hold the pump body on to the front of the engine and it will take 1 1/2 to 2 hrs, regards Tim
