Hi Guys,

300tdi Disco:

Driving along in the sunshine everything great, Battery light came on and lost power steering.
Pulled over and popped bonnet.
The fan belt was loose and just hanging on.
It seems that the bearings in the water pump have collapsed and the top pulley is slack, moving up and down.
I managed to crawl to work (1 Mile)

Now I am stuck at work.

I know I need a new water pump and gasket.

What I would like your guys advice on is, It lost abit of coolant/water and there was water dripping out when I first popped the bonnet.
Where would this be coming from?? would you recommend changing the P gasket aswell?

Please advise as I have a lift sorted for 3 o clock to go and pick the parts up.

ATB

Yeah, I would change the P-Gasket. You will risk it leaking after you change the pump even if it wasn't before, as some of the bolts that hold the casting to the block need to be removed to replace the pump, and the gasket may well 'let go' after you have done that.

As I thought, I will pick up a P gasket as well.

Thankfully or hopefully not Sean. Whats quickest way of checking?

only real way is to get a flat rule on the head - but if the temp gauge didn't go FSD and it didn't steam it's a good bet all will be well

Yes while you are 'in there'. Why skimp. Neither flavour of Tdi likes being cooked and a leaky P-gasket is one of the quickest ways of doing that to a 300 :)

And don't I know that!! Cooked mine twice in the last 3 months, 2nd time was due to the P gasket. Big an expensive job for the sake of a £1 gasket and and hours work!

Happened to me a few months ago, exactly the same. Got a recon water pump from a fella north of Bristol and job done, also had to change the tensioner at the same time, I thought I was being clever as I thought the bearings in the tensioner had gone so I ordered two sets of bearings only to find that the bearings in there were fine and it was the coating (teflon??) in the bit where the bearing sits that collapsed so now have three spare sets of tensioner bearings
