Have you tried removing the bottom 4 gearbox to flywheel mounting bolts?
It might be only two but i cant be sure

ahhhhhh now that would make sence , do you know if they hold the ladder frame in place then, if they do then it would mean not having to take the emgine out , if thats the case many many many thanks lol you have save me no end of work

before ya strip the bottom end out Have you checked the top end Pushrods tend to bend first.. with the head off you will also be able to check that the pistons all rise to the same height, or not. Which will tell you whether any of the conrods are bent..

i have the top off and the cam out and no bent push rods so heads next to come off, thanks for advice

I have just come through the other side of this in the last month. Hydrolocked the engine, bent the con rod on number 4, took a chunk out the block as well. The engine has to come out to get the 2 bolts that are on the back of the bell house.

I ended up needing a piston, con rod, set of shells, 4 sets of rings, timing belt and a zillion gaskets. While its apart do all the rings and hone.

I also knackered both diffs from being sat submerged so just fixed them today although the front diff I have fitted screams at certain revs!! It's been being replaced shortly when my limited slip diffs arrive.

Good luck!

So what you two guys are saying is a snorkel and a breather kit is a wise investment!

I actually forgot that on mine but when resealing the snorkel did notice it and replaced it with a stainless bolt and washer and plenty of sealant.
Did you have a breather on the fuel tank, as ive read about it but cant see where to put one.

Hi mate did my breather's last month and had one for the fuel tank, but have been informed the fuel tank on a defender doesn't need one as the breather goes to the filler neck, just make sure the filler cap has the rubber seal on it and makes a good seal, Apparentley that's what my mate was told by Devon 4x4 they do this on their challenge trucks and never had a prob, Hope their right as I is going to florida strata soon and if they are wrong I'm ****ed:)

Thanks for that i did look and see the breather went into the top of the neck, but kept seeing posts referring to the breather needing to be rerouted but couldnt see why.

Yes, the 4 bolts do go through the ladder frame too. :)
