Ok guy`s and gall`s, Its a hot day and I have been running the air con and it works fine.BUT i now have water leaking out underneath the gearbox area on my Disco TD5, dripping fairly fast.

The temp gauge is on the norm and coz the engine is hot I havn`t as yet checked water level in expansion bottle.

Head gasket was replaced 4 months ago.

Is it the aircon or do you think some thing more severe, haven`t looked properly underneath yet but from the bonnet looking down it is behind or under gear box housing.

Help????

Thanks, now have it or ramps. the water is coming from both sides of the gearbox from the drivers side i cant see where from but the passenger side just above the gear box on the bulkhead is a little pipe/tap/overlow? it is dripping from there.

But more worrying is whilst underneath i noticed on the bottom of the box a round plate held with three bolts just to the right of this there is a hole, where a bolt should be, does this mean my auto box has no oil?

thats yer condensed water coming out. if you didn't have them you'd get a wet carpet and its wise to check they are unblocked from time to time. just poke a bit of welding wire up em, or if yer really keen trace the pipe back to the evaporator, remove it and clear any crap that may block it later.

yer hole might be for yer wading plug, a bolt/plug is fitted if you ever go wading in deep water. its stops yer clutch getting wet. if you int in water leave it open to allow any fluid that may be it there to drain

My disco does exactly that, leaks about a pint after a run with air con on. Incidently, my heater rad leaked awhile back and this was caused water INSIDE the car as carpets near centre console got wet. Has the leak got a similiar colour to your coolant? Keep eye on coolant, bearing in mind you say car is on ramps now and no longer level.

ffs heidi!! its not a leak. its the moisture in the air, condensing on the evaporaor (the bit that cools yer air), it has to go somewhere so they have two pipes, one each side to allow it to run off. its perfectly normal and nothing to get excited about

yes cheers all, I asked local independant Landie specialist and he has said exactly the same about water leak and plug.

Great, wife and I now talking again, no money needs spending on that bloody Landrover, as she puts it.Although she always smiles when she drives it.

Thanks all

Thank god for LZ! Had same problem today on the M4 though, was going along and slowly the back window got all greasy and oily, when i stopped the underneath and back was drenched with what i thought was auto box oil, but luckily oil level is fine and looks to be coming out of the air con pipe. but should this much come out when moving??
Cheers lads

You could be throwing PINTS of water out of a aircon system.

The water forms in exactly the same way as ice forms in your kitchen refrigerator and freezer, except a whole lot more of it.

Read what Slob said, and make sure those drain tubes are kept clear, 'cos if they block that water may end up in your carpets and socks.

It could be several GALLONS of water on a long run in ideal hot and humid conditions.

And paying £4.50 a gallon for diesel to power the air conditioning compressor.

You might be surprised to find out just how much.

hmm went out again today and saw the water/oily crap seen before had coated the back window again - only used a/c for about 2 mins, but once off it kept coming out and up the back window, underside is completely coated

the water from the aircon should be nice clear stuff, if it has oil in it you need to find where the oil is coming from.

locate the drain pipes and put a bowl under it to catch the water?
run yer A/C at full whack fer 15min with yer doors open,
if the collected water is clear dunt worry, if its oily go back to the evaporator and see if you can trace where its coming from.
i can't think of any place it could be from as the oil in the A/C would only come out if you have a leak and as yer A/C is working its unlikey to have a leak. and there int any other oil that could mix with the condensed water until after it has left the drain pipe..

i suspect you have a gearbox leak that is mixing with the water and the whole lot is being blown backwards.
