Water leak, but where from??

I've got a leak in the back, nothing unusual there but i've tried sealing everyting i can see but it still persists.

It drips from about midway along under the o/s alpine area onto the rear load space cover.

I've sealed the window rubbers but is there a way it could be the gutter? i dont know what sort of join that is. We have not had rain for a few days, just a heavy morning dew and it was still wet inside????

I dont want to replace the rear floor until i get it sorted.

Any ideas?

God,allsorts.....sunroofs if you got em,condenation running to lowest point.......

is this with the roof liner in or out ?

Its got the lining in still but the lining seems dry.

The sunroof was siliconed before i got it, no drips from round the roof opening.

Its just the O/S alipne area but not actually the alpins i dont think.

Have you done a search on leaky gutters-worth a try

Check where the rear door hinges are, look up the channel, water ingress get's in just below the gutter there ... if it's like mine it'll be rusting away nicely:doh:

Ok so I have dug a bit deeper, i took the upper plastic alpine trim off, there are no visible signs of water ingress around the alpine - its all clean paint and rubber.

There are some signs of staining on the bottom edge of the trim where it returns to the rear side window, so i thought the roof/gutter joint was the problem. Out came the water and after a few gallons, nothing, all dry inside.

I then flooded the rear sunroof, nothing again.

So, what is the possibility of it getting in up front but only dripping out at the rear? The headlining is dry front to back so it would have to run along the roof joint i guess, it seems remote but i'm all out of possibles now. We only had a bit of dew this morning and it was still wet at the back so i was expecting the culprit to show its face really easily.

It does appear to have been in the shop at some time in its life for the leak-fixes documented to be fixed as there is plenty of professional looking sealant in the rear corner but no drips.

So what would be the next test, it cant be getting from the nearside to the offside so that narrows it down to half the vehicle i guess.

Any ideas?

I'd suggest taking the headlining out for a proper look??

Ok i got the hose out and flooded the poor old girl, found where the water is getting in but now need to find how to stop it doing so

It drips along this seam most of it runs down the rear pillar and onto the floor but if it was there, it would also run off the plastic trim onto the load space cover.


So, where is the likely target for sealant??? Anyone got any ideas of the design of the roof/body joint, if i knew how it was made it might help. It cant be getting in any lower than the gutter line as it dont run upwards so it must be in the gutter seam somehow.

Whats the best culprit????

I had a leak too, rain overnight and the floor was soaked, mine turned out to be a tiny kink in the rubber door seal/jam, took it off and straighten it up and it seams to have cleared it up.

Mine suffers the exact same problem.
It looks (from my prodding about) that the seam between the gutter and the roof is actually IN the gutter. Then they just fill the gutter with sealant. I have signs on mine where the sealant has dried/shrunk and there are hairline cracks in the paint either side of the inside of the gutter.
This is where I am looking next.

I bumped into a guy who used to work for a dealership. Reconed most of the Disco1's (Not sure if that was just the 300's?) they sold came back for resealing to the rear gutters. And he described this problem exactly.
Unfortunatly, I didn't find out what they did to seal them.

He also mentioned that the water could build up in that channel and slosh forwards and down the windscreen pillar when you brake. So causing you to look for the leak at the front of the vehicle.

Anyway, back to the hairline cracks....
I did try painting the rear 9 inches of the gutter channel, on the external well of the gutter (ie. where the water lies) with thinned down hammerite, using a small artists brush. That seemed to have improved things quite a lot. But not 100%. So I think the cracks probably extend further forward.

I have just brought a bottle of "captain trolleys" creeping crack filler. It wicks down into hairline cracks then sets. Also it is supposed to be flexible, which should be better than the hammerite which will probably harden and re-crack. So will be trying that soon.

Thanks, thats what i was thinking, stupid design!

I have tried Capt Tolley but its not sealing it. I will next try masking up the roof edge and running a good bead of sikaflex black into the gutter channel.

If that dont seal it nothing will

epoxy should work very well too, either the resin or better still the 2 part paint

Thats a thought, something that could be brushed on and would run in would be good.

Mine leaked at the same place on both sides, it was the gutters, above where the rear panel join is, I dug it out neatly with a small wood chisel and removed the crappy sealing tape that Land Rover use over the gap and filled with Sikaflex, I also put a light smear under the gutter in the join, not leaked since.

Mine leaked in the same place on both sides, I found it was the gutters, there is a join in the gutter above where the rear panel joins that Land Rover have sealed with crappy sealing tape, I dug out the gutter sealant neatly around this joint with a small wood chisel, removed the crappy tape and filled with sikaflex after thoroughly drying with a hair dryer, I also smeared a bead of sikaflex below the gutter at this point, no leaks since.

Excellent, looks like i'm in the right area then for a fix.

Where was the sealing tape?? Was that in the gutter too?

Yeah I dug out the soft sealant in the gutter bottom after removing the gutter trim ( forgot to tell you that !!!! sorry), the tape is over the join in the gutter immediately above where the back panel joint is, you should see it with the trim off.
