Disco 2 Water ingress / drying out carpets...

Hi All
Got the D2 stuck in water yesterday, luckily not deep, but about 6" above the bottom of the doors. As a result, the 'underlay' of the carpets, the 1" thick foam/sound deadening is sodden.
2 questions as sure Im not the first ;-)
Lifted as much of the carpet as I can without going full on interior dismantling!

1) Other than the door seals, are there other places to look it can come in from? Cant see holes or similar under the carpet, so presuming the door seals are not that great (presume original 2004)
2) Any advice to dry the 'underlay' out? Got heaters and dehumidifier on the go in there at the moment but still pretty wet after almost 2 days...

Is it under cover and/or are the windows open a crack?
Otherwise the humidity will stay in the vehicle.

Hi there, yes, windows are all open a crack (have those wind 'deflectors' around the top edge so can have windows open without risk of rain getting in ) Thanks for mentioning, could just move the issue elsewhere otherwise

to get the carpets out you need to remove at least the front seats, and the carpet is held by the center consul so best to take that out as well, when my D2 leaked it literally have litres of water in the carpets and took a few weeks to dry out in direct sun light

Hi, when I had wet carpets I lifted the carpets and put newspapers under it, replacing the paper several times until most of the water had beeb soaked up. For weeks on I had then put a piece of thin wood under the carpets so that the rest of the dampness could dry out. It took some time, though… best regards, Matthias

Thanks all - I've managed to lift enough of the carpets to get access to the wet parts in front and back without removing seats, fan heaters and door open blowing for 3 days now and end is in sight
Now to look at ways to improve the door seals!

Don't think your ever going to make it watertight, water will find its way in through the sills etc.

You're absolutely right, keeping oil in and water out on a D2 seems to be an impossible task ;-)

This post just about sums up the D2, I keep asking myself why do I keep it, found this after driving through flood, it had been fine previously. Who sticks metal to metal with Silicon and expects to stay?

Carpets soaked and no easy way to dry until summer.

Thats ugly! Even worse being white you know its bathroom sealant (which works very well on bathrooms)
My Series 3 had the same between the internal panels, all removed and scraped off. Will be using some proper stuff going forward!

JB Weld!

I had to make a patch under the Servo with sealant?? (Temporarily) to stop water getting in to the footwell!! But now in garage being sealed by weld!

Plus the other bits that need it! (Wheel arches NS/OS - Footwell Bulkhead) but while preparing for welding!! Have see previous weld attempts
